In a really fucked up way, you're going back to the quote of mine you originally misunderstood. Just because something can kill a person, that doesn't mean they should be banned. Ah. Sorry if I made that assumption. I just kinda dip in and out of this thread. I miss a lot of posts.I would also like to point out that I have never once said I want guns banned.
But if someone drops one on you you will probably be dead.

I agree with regulation, Kristie!

That's funny because my Ruger SP-101 stainless steel .357 revolver is holding down a pile of papers in my (locked) office right now. It also happens to be loaded.Kristie wrote:Inanimate objects are made by humans to fill a purpose. You are trying to ascribe moral intent to an inanimate object. That's just silly, because inanimate objects have no intent, only the people who make use of them do.

Why? Inanimate objects have no intentions and cannot act without a human at the helm. It's the human's intentions that are important, and a paperweight used as a bludgeon to smash someone's brains out is far deadlier than every firearm I own...so far...because I've never needed to use one of them to kill someone.Kristie wrote:In a really fucked up way, you're going back to the quote of mine you originally misunderstood. But if someone drops one on you you will probably be dead.
But if called upon to kill someone at need, I'll use whatever inanimate object comes to hand, be it a tree branch, a paperweight, or a handgun. I prefer a handgun though because of it's effectiveness at dispensing death and my skill with it which reduces the likelihood of sending a bullet to the wrong place.
What any of those objects was "invented for" is utterly irrelevant in the extreme. All that matters is the objects utility for self defense if self defense is called for, and in such situations, the more instantly lethal the weapon is, the better it fills the criteria for an effective self-defense weapon.

On the other hand, we don't presume that everyone is an idiot and require them to prove they aren't before we respect their exercise of their fundamental rights. We wait for them to behave improperly and then we punish them, not vice-versa.

This reminds me of when I was in school and our religion teacher (the type of woman who wouldn't allow her son watch the cartoon, Duckula because it was "occultish"
) told us a story of some kids who dropped a banger (firecracker) in some ol' guy's house and he had a heart attack. She asked us all to rate on a scale of 1 to 10 how violent bangers were. Everyone else in the class gave figures of 5 to 7 except me. I wrote 0. She hit the roof over it. She asked how I could possibly say 0? I told her for the same reason I give knives, guns and nuclear missiles 0. Knives don't leap off counters and cut people open. Guns don't break into windows and shoot people. Bombs don't self detonate. I told her that it's not inanimate objects that are violent, it's people. By this stage two other girls in the class chimed in against me seemingly disgusted that I could say such a thing. The teacher ran out and got the principle

Libertarianism: The belief that out of all the terrible things governments can do, helping people is the absolute worst.
