It should be remembered that formatting on MS Word can be an utter pain in the arse sometimes too.

I never use Word - of any variety really.

Well, I did, while I was studying last year. But in a professional context - I never have to.

But Excel and PPT are replete with annoying tics where they programme tries to anticipate what you want, or limits your freedom to move that box .025mms up so that it is level with the one beside it...

The last time I tried one of the open varieties, it was fairly limited - particularly the spreadsheet.

I presume that this has improved since then.

Oh yes it can :ab: . Furthermore, it's rather unfair to judge the open sw on how well it can handle proprietary file formats. It should really be the other way around, shouldn't it. Don't get MS Office, unless it reads open format flawlessly :smoke:

LibreOffice is the true OpenOffice now, and is updated much more frequently.

I flip between LibreOffice, MS Office 2003, and MS Office 2007. Mostly I work with spreadsheets, and from a basic usability perspective, LibreOffice Calc can hold its own with either version of Excel IMHO.

I find it can be slowish to load the first time you launch one of the applications, but after that it's like a greased pig.

I use Office 2010 in work and find it (by far) the most infuriating incarnation of Office yet. I struggle to find its most basic features. It took me 10 mins to find "save as".

I will only ever use MS Office again if they bring back clippy. If Windows 8 had clippy I might even use it.

I think they want people to invest so much time learning how to use the irritating fucker that they will assume all office suites are like it and be scared to change.

While Office 2007 has some very nice features, I also find it infuriating at times. I've no doubt 2010 is even better worse. Heaven know what the next version will be like.

Excel 2007 also has some weird performance bugs that drive me nuts. :banghead:

I rarely leave gedit these days. There was one guy who was a bit of a dick and wanted pdfs so had to fire libre office up for that but the rest is either maths which is easier to do by hand or code which is fine straight from the editor.

nano and pico are ok for a quick one line edit on a config file but dont have enough toys for anything decent. I have my plugins sorted out nicely on gedit. I cant get excited about vim and emacs. I keep trying but it is just too fiddly and counterintuitive
