He might have well as said Left wingers have Oral complexes and Republicans Anal complexes.
They don't? I refer to the Bob Dole quote above.

This seems like a good thread to link to this:

Someone linked to it years ago at RDF. It's free to download, and very interesting. :pop:

I am a bit puzzled as to why Audley and Seabass are so offended by the studies. They are simply the results of research. Any value judgment surely must be added later.

I mean, it say in one place that conservatives are more organised, which is good. In another place it says liberals are more charitable, which is also good. Good on both sides.

For me, I am a bit of both. My desk is messy, but there is organisation there, with filing cabinets and calendars storing the information I need in a form that is readily available. I am a bit of a 'bleeding heart liberal' while still being respectful of authority. Mind you, the latter is easier in New Zealand. We have much less corruption.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

I'm not offended. I just find such binary reductions of human psychology to be a bit like saying " after showing some people some pictures, those who said they were liberals liked kittens but conservatives had affinity to dogs."

It tells us very little and I think that such reductions are actually detrimental because they will be used as conventional wisdom by twats as if they did mean something.

Conservatives are insecure, fearful, and overly emotional.

Liberals are logical, intellectual, and snappy dressers.

Bias confirmed.

Or.

Conservatives are organised, effective, and keep the wheels of industry turning.
Liberals are messy, disorganised, gullible, and an easy touch for a con artist.

Not bias, but simply how you word it.

Let's see here:
Conservatives prefer the status quo and are more likely to associate with fellow whites, straights, and high status people.
Translation: Conservatives are racist, homophobic, and prefer rich people.
Conservatives are offended by in-group betrayals, disrespect for authority and tradition, and signs of sexual or spiritual 'impurity'.
Translation: Conservatives are tribalistic, fascistic, authoritarian, homophobic, religiously intolerant.
Conservatives have a need for facts that are clear cut.
Translation: Conservatives see the world in black and white.
Conservatives are more concerned about the world being a dangerous place, and show stronger emotional aversion to unpleasant stimuli.
Translation: Conservatives are driven by fear.

Yeah, no agenda, no bias, good on both sides.

Then there's the bit about brain differences between liberals and conservatives. I'll have to see a lot more evidence before I believe that one.

Sorry, this all seems a little Tyrannicalesque to me.

Seabass

To make your point, you had to 'translate' into derogatory terms.

What is the difference between 'determined' and 'stubborn'?

You can phrase the same thing in opposite ways emotionally if you wish to.
As I said, the studies are basically science, and the results should be unbiased. I cannot guarantee the lack of bias, of course, but the reports were published in peer reviewed journals, which should act to reduce any bias.

Let me see if I can 'translate' your four points.

1. Conservatives are social people who are good with their peers.
2. Conservatives respect unity, oppose unnecessary and damaging change, and have high moral values.
3. Conservatives are sensible, down to Earth people, who know that many ideas are foolish.
4. Conservatives are cautious people, who are wary of things that might cause problems.

All in the translation.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

If you bothered to read Haidt you'd know he is against bias and his books are about how left and right can learn from each other.

I don't doubt it. I was responding to Groper's OP though, not Haidt's book.

I was using the wording taken from the New Scientist article. I didn't see it as insulting - just descriptive, but maybe it needed translating.
