He wasn't going to live forever and he didn't have any heirs to carry on his work the way he did. I also think the Lucas Film properties would be worth a lot less if sold after his death, so there is also a business issue.

You can almost guess the plot of SW:VII based on some old video games, and it's not that bad

Leia and Solo marry, have kids, some of whom train as Jedi. Luke is a Jedi Master training all the new Jedi. Remnants of the Empire and mysterious Sith are the enemy. The original three actors are a shoe in for the next trilogy too. All they need is a good script, and there is plenty of time for them to make sure it is.

Episode 7? Screw that. It's already been written in the expanded universe (I read every Star Wars novel there was when I was a kid). It's bad enough they shit all over it with episodes 1-3. I hope they go back to 'The Old Republic' era (Before the dark times. Before the Jar Jar) as in the timeline of the video games - it would tie into what is already a successful game series with an active MMO as well. New games + more subscribers + better sales on merchandise (everyone already owns a Boba Fett and Millenium Falcon).

Yes, I hope they take it back to the original setting. A New Hope meets Firefly sort of thing would work.

Yeah. A new hope + Firefly + Farscape sort of thing. It'd be Star Wars for adults. Sex, violence, developed characters, good plot line, character development, and a mix of grown-up comedy with some random goofiness.

Not gonna happen though. I'm afraid Star Wars will further degenerate into a show for kiddies.

The whole 'look' was advanced - the home planet with flying cars traffic and cool buildings - the silver smooth spaceship they traveled around in when they found the kid was especially out of touch with the grittiness of the originals. Put the Millenium Falcon next to that and try to argue that the MF and even the Imperial Cruisers and Death Star came later.

Well, they had the flying cars in EP. 6, you can see them during the celebration, plus Luke drove a farmer's version in Ep. 4. And the shiny starship was for the head of state of a planet. Surprising that it was so small, but showy is part of the prestige game.
