Star Wars job goes to Toy Story 3 writer

Hollywood scribe Michael Arndt will write the next instalment in the Star Wars series, Lucasfilm has confirmed.

Arndt won an Oscar for best original screenplay for the 2006 comedy Little Miss Sunshine. His screenplay for Toy Story 3 was nominated for best adapted screenplay in 2010.

He has also co-written the second film in the Hunger Games trilogy.

According to the Hollywod Reporter, the latest Star Wars story will focus on a new generation of heroes.

However, there could be appearances by actors Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher in older incarnations of their characters - Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia - from the original Star Wars trilogy.

Harrison Ford, who played space smuggler Han Solo, is also reported to be interested in reprising his role.

Ford's Hollywood star rose with his appearances in the three Star Wars film, which he followed up with his role as archaeologist adventurer Indiana Jones and films including with The Fugitive and his Oscar-nominated turn in Witness.

Hamill is an in-demand voice actor and Fisher, who struggled with drug addictions throughout the 1970s, is a successful novelist and screenwriter.

A company that made a fortune by repackaging fairy tales buys out a smaller company that made a fortune with a repackaged fairy tale? What a surprise. :ddpan:

Next on Disney's list of acquisitions might be Steven Spielberg's portfolio.

Did they spend the episode making fun of Lucas and Disney? If so I'll pass, because I'd like to remain cautiously optimistic about Episode 7. James Bond and Batman movies managed to reboot themselves nicely. And I thought Toy Story 3 was about as good as an animated film gets, so this choice of writer is okay by me.

(Which reminds me - has anyone seen Skyfall yet? I'm hoping to go see it on Saturday (I say "hoping" because we never seem to have a guaranteed babysitter). And if so, is it good?)

The Lucas Disney deal is hardly surprising when you think about it :prof:

Lucas is getting old, and it's better that he sells it and help oversee the transition while he is still alive. Lucas also got 2$ Billion in Disney stock, so he has some sway over the company as a whole. It's still Lucas's hire that was running Lucas Film that is running the Star Wars franchise, and Lucas is still involved.

Lucas has a long relationship with ABC/Disney. ABC did those crappy Star wars TV episodes, and Disney Studio theme already had an Indiana Jones and Star Wars attraction. They also occasionally did special Star wars weekends with the actors attending and a huge parade of costumed characters.

If not Disney than who?
He wasn't going to live forever and he didn't have any heirs to carry on his work the way he did. I also think the Lucas Film properties would be worth a lot less if sold after his death, so there is also a business issue.
