Great Britain includes the surrounding minor islands, and Britain is the entire island chain including Ireland. I think :ask:
You just didn't read the thread, did you? :sadcheer:

Geographically, the big island is called Great Britain.
Politically, the big island and the surrounding smaller islands are called Great Britain.

"Britain" is a short-hand term for "Great Britain" (England, Scotland & Wales).

Sometimes (technically inaccurately) "Britain" is used interchangeably with "U.K."

"U.K." is shorthand for "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

Basically, all of the above isn't the point I was trying to originally make. The main point is that (as far as the outside world is concerned) England isn't how you should refer to the U.K. There is no such thing as an English passport. Our prime minister doesn't govern England. He governs the U.K. When referring to her, it is nonsensical to say "Queen of England". That's like calling Obama the President of Alaska/California. It is true, but it is only a part of the bigger truth.

It is a country of countries. England is only one of them.
Well you didn't read my post either, please do :(

Sorry, no, I did read your post at the time. It was more or less accurate. Minor quibbles, but that's all.

So, yes. Well done. Now spread the message to your fellow countrymen. :smoke:

I would disagree with that.

This is because:

1. You were more or less the winners (all the wealth went there)
2. See 1.

As for when English people are confused and baffled about the long memories and preoccupation of the Scots, the Irish, and the Welsh, I'd point out:

1. The obsession with the Battle of Britain
2. Dunkirk
3. The Blitz
4. The Somme
5. Verdun
6. North Africa
7. Hitler only having on ball
8. The filthy huns (World War 1 variety).

...and so on.

:)

:cheer: I do try and spread my British knowledge to my less informed country members. I am curious of the minor quibbles, please elaborate.

Is the a distinction between Great Britain and Greater Britain. Is there a difference between Briton and Britain? What about Brittany?

"Jock" again? Running out of substance?

I've been really charitable. Either you're trying to troll or you're incredibly stupid. Both possibilities are equally likely and I wouldn't be surprised by either of them.

So... call me "Jock" again. Because that works for you. :bored:

Northern Ireland is certainly in the north of Ireland, but the most northerly point in Ireland is not in Northern Ireland, so it is therefore in the south.

Be sure they understand that Scotland is not in England, and "Wales" has no "h" in it.

The USA recognises its plurality as it is the 'United States of America', not the 'United State of America'.
So if it is a plurality of countries, as you insist, why is the appellation 'UK' singular "United Kingdom"? :toetap:
