Big E's last voyage

Post by laklak » Fri Nov 02, 2012 1:59 pm

After a long and illustrious career, CVN-65, U.S.S. Enterprise, will be decommissioned on December 1st. First deployed in 1962, she's the oldest active duty warship in the fleet, the longest aircraft carrier ever built, the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier and the only vessel in her class.

Here's to a grand old lady and all who served on her

I always enjoyed seeing the decommissioned ships in Bremerton, I wonder where they'll put this giant?

Has to be done, the ship will be in a sorry state anyway once the reactors have been removed.

It's the scrapping of the original Big E that's unforgivable. :mob:

At least a couple of the conventional super carriers are marked for donation as museum ships.

EDIT: That''s a very famous picture in the OP, with the Long Beach in the middle.

My cousin is onboard! I'm going down to Norfolk next weekend for a welcome home/you-got-promoted party for him. He made Chief during this cruise.

Taken a while ago, I assume. I see F4 flying bricks, F8 Crusaders, A4 Skyhawks, A6 Intruders (or maybe E6 Prowlers?). What are the large aircraft aft? A3 Skywarriors?

They look more like A-5 Vigilantes. The way the folded wingtips point straight up says A-5. The A-3 wingtips folded back over the main wings.

Why don't they scuttle it to create an artificial reef? :ask:
