There was a massive crane disaster just blocks from there a few years ago. (you might have heard about it.)

One woman living in the vicinity was being interviewed for the local news. She asked the reasonable question: since we all remember how bad it can be if one of those cranes falls, why didn't they take the crane down when they heard the storm was coming?

Inquiring minds really would like to know.
It can take a couple of weeks or more to disassemble one of those cranes. No time.

Hm. I'm not convinced.

Emergency crews will be taking less time to get it down now, and the structure's compromised.

Well, they gambled and lost, that's for sure. The thick section of the tower at the top just under the cab is the lift section. If that part is damaged then I don't know how they will get it down without bringing in a huge portable crane.

Yeah, and since they need the boom to remove sections of the tower, it can't lower itself anyway.

Yeah, saw something similar in Miami once. They waited until dawn on a Sunday to pull it so the lookie-Lous wouldn't jam traffic.

Couple of pounds of Semtex will drop it handily.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

It's obviously part of the ongoing 911 conspiracy!

Will it ever end?!

I was writing in the third person present tense, trying to be more literary, like...

:leave:
As Beckett said, I always try to write about myself in the last person.
I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

Yes, that's what I've been doing.

Everything all right here (read-- upper Manhattan). MTA still down, most bridges open to emergency vehicles or doctors and other medical professionals.

Some scaffolding and trees down, caused damage, totalled cars. We still have power, etc.

Very, very glad we don't live in the cooler part of town. It's a mess.
Didn't know you live in upper Manhattan. We used to live in Washington Heights, near Pinehurst & 187th st. (We've since moved up to Tarrytown.)

(cross-posted on RatSkep. Can't be bothered to re-write now. Sorry.)

We're ok here, but no power, heat or running water. Some broken windows, and I think some structural damage to other parts of the building. Server is down, but so far we have cell phone service. (Posting from my iPhone.) Keeping phones mostly off to conserve batteries. Will check in when I can.

I'd rented a car for the weekend and returned it yesterday. When I got home - only a few minutes later - a huge tree had fallen directly on my parking space.

I know this storm could have been worse, but it was a dangerous motherfucker. And it still is: weakened tree limbs are still coming down unexpectedly. Stay careful, everyone.

Update:

Somebody has managed to set up a data center in one room w/generator and wireless Internet. FSM knows how, but I'm glad for it. Charging my phone right now.

The metro re-opened at 2:00 today so I rode over to the national mall and walked around. Almost deserted, it was eerie.
