I've dealt with a few hurricanes in my time, if I were in the Northeast I'd be heading for the hills for a few days or weeks. Maybe go west and then cut down south to someplace safe like the Gulf coast (who would ever have thought of saying that??). Anyway, if you can GTFOD (get the fuck outta Dodge). These things are bad enough down here, where we're as prepared as possible for them.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

If possible, but with this storm, one needs to go hundreds of miles. Because of the massive amount of rainfall that is supposed to happen when this bitch parks herself for a couple of days may cause massive flooding all over the area. If you can get to Maine, or even better, South Carolina, go. The problem is, you have to drive through the storm now. You can head west on I-80 or the Pennsylvania Turnpike, but once on that, you might as well keep going until you get to Youngstown, Ohio.

I just checked myfoxhurricane and it's one goddamned big bitch. Looks like you need to get almost to the Mississippi to get out of the rain. I'd probably try I-81 south and pick up 77 in South Carolina. Probably can't even get out of Jersey now.

However, if you have cookies then you'll be fine.

My car is on the street and I can't tell from looking at the topography whether this area might flood enough to damage it or not. It's insured.
Normally FEMA recommends that you have an emergency kit that will allow you to survive on your own for three days, but in this case, due to the massive number of people who will be affected, you should expect to be on your own, without food, power, water or transportation for at least two weeks, maybe more. If you're not already ready for that, please GET OUT NOW! Get in your car and head uphill as quickly as you can.

This is going to be major damage and chaos, with gangs already planning looting sprees by Twitter. FEMA will simply be overwhelmed and it may actually come down to martial law and National Guard troops because of the violence and looting.

If there is ANY way you can get out, go west and plan to stay there for several weeks, I strongly recommend that you do so RIGHT NOW.

Shut the computer down and leave. Don't think about it, just do it.

That's my professional emergency management-trained recommendation, and I'm absolutely serious here.
I appreciate the concern and advice Seth.

Buuuut.... timing is everything. I just moved in here four days ago so I could chase work on the marketing side of architecture. There was already some demand for that. With billions of dollars of damage about to happen, I figure my services will be in very high demand come about Friday. No way I'm leaving now!
You won't have anything to do for a month at least. Until then the damage areas will be on National Guard lockdown while rescue and recovery efforts are underway. Just look at New Orleans. It was months before any rebuilding was undertaken. Take a vacation.

The only tragedy so far is that all the neighborhood liquor stores remained closed today. They really aren't being very helpful. :lay:

Latest is 4 to 5 hours from landfall in New Jersey, storm surge there up to 11 feet, 4 to 5 foot storm surge north and south of landfall, expect inland flooding with up to 12 inches of rain in areas, plus 3 to 4 feet of snow in West Virgina mountains.

Power failures a certainty. FEMA marshalling relief forces now, utilities calling in tree-clearing and line-building crews from all over US.

Probably too late to get out of it completely, but if you're in the coastal storm surge area, as far south as DC, you still have time to get to higher ground with escape routes to the west and south.

Bad, very bad.

Here's where I skate. There's a debris line of stuff that marks the high water mark that comes up several feet over the sidewalk along the edge. I'm a good bit higher than that.
