Full-scale hissycanes are great to watch from a barracks without power and the only access road under a few feet of water. Luckily we had DUKW being restored by some loons to bring us food and water. The CO said there wasn't any place better, so we should just hunker down and suck it up. So we went skinny dipping in the parking lot.

Gonna suck to be on the NYC subway if it tops the Battery. Better be two or three floors up with lots of WATER stored up. Food is good, but you can live for weeks without food, but only about three days without water. Don't forget the toilet tank (not bowl) and the water heater.

Hmmmm... I guess I'm glad I'm on the third floor. Should be high enough. I'll start hoarding stuff tomorrow.

BTW, new to me urban living, the local Safeway has parking in a parking garage. You take your shopping cart down the elevator and into the garage, then park it in cart-holding stalls like a regular parking lot. Minimum $8 purchase to park for free for 90 minutes. It works.

We're on good high ground, but we get water seepage from the roof-- which is yucky, and could make for grossness days after the storm.

No tank. And we need to be able to use the tub for le bebe. I guess we'll need to put by some gallons of water.

Better to be prepared and not need it than the other way around. Growing up in an area vulnerable to tornadoes, hurricanes, and flooding you learn to keep a few things on hand - bottled water, food that doesn't need refrigerating , flashlight, batteries, etc. Oh, and don't forget to fill up the car. If power's out for a few of days, there will be no way to get gas.

I've seen those. I was still living in Mississippi right after Katrina and knew a few people who had to resort to siphoning gas from lawnmowers, boats, and friends' cars (with permission) in order to get around in the week after the storm.
