Cultural Ranting Corner

Post by Red Celt » Fri Oct 19, 2012 2:58 am

A thread in which you can rant about anything and everything that culture has to offer. Copious amounts of swearing required.

Allow me to start.

I am sick to fucking death of drivers whose knowledge of the roads is bad enough to cause problems for drivers who took the fucking trouble to learn (enough of) the handbook. Each time I commute to and from university, I'm mostly driving along country roads. There's a few villages on the way, but the vast majority of the route is signposted as "National Speed Restriction Applies".

In single-lane traffic, that's 60mph. On a dual-carriageway or motorway (where oncoming traffic is divorced from you) it is 70mph.

So... on country roads, it's 60mph. Obviously, hairpin bends and sharp turns reduce that considerably... but this isn't an issue of safe or unsafe driving. This is an issue of perfectly clear and straight stretches of road being driven by inconsiderate fucks at exactly 50mph. It isn't that they're being safe. They stick to that speed so closely, that they must think that it is the actual speed limit.

The long queue of impatient traffic behind them, and the death-defying attempts to overtake them... none of this clues them in to the fact that they are driving too slowly. Multiply the time wasted by every vehicle stuck behind them, and that's the sum total of other people's lives that these fuckwits are depriving them of.

It happens every day. An annoying commute is made even more annoying (and lengthy... and dangerous) because of the 50mph club.

Inconsiderate fucks.

Bicyclists.

They are fully aware of the changes in the law giving them more rights, but don't seem to have picked up on either their responsibilities or on common courtesy.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Don't get me started on the double-bind that motorists want bicyclists to live in, other than to note hospitalizations of bicyclists intentionally run down.

And having just rear-ended someone, I'm not sure I can appeal to the other. (Though the accident report says otherwise...)

Around here, tailgating seems to be the order of the day - so close that you can't see the front end of their car. If I ever have to stop suddenly, they'd better have good insurance or I'm going to wind up owning most of their stuff.

There have been moments when I've thought about slamming on the brakes, but then I think about how it will hurt and how much hassle it is dealing with all the stuff that comes after a wreck. However, given the number of miles I drive each week, it is probably bound to happen sooner or later.

Have you noticed (RC, and other British road users) that the folks who do a constant 50 in a 60 limit also have the following properties: they will slow to 30 to pass a speed camera (because ALL speed cameras are set to 30 regardless of the limit, aren't they? (Especially those monitoring traffic in the other direction.)); they will continue driving at 50mph when the limit drops to 40, but reduce to 25 in a 30.

There is another class of driver that maintains a fixed 45mph in any and all circumstances: they hold a stead 45 in any limit, including 30.

As for cyclists ... I can only speak for myself, but since I regularly cycle down narrow roads I make an effort to use passing places to let other vehicles pass. I've only been driven off the road a couple of times by folks coming the other way who will slowly roll past the passing place 10 yards ahead of me, and try to get by me where the road is physically narrower than their SUV. I don't take it personally.

(I'm one of those cyclists that stops at red lights.)

I just despise people, places, concepts and things. I shan't go on about it though.
