Need a new (cheap) netbook? Recommend? Advise?

Post by rasetsu » Sun Oct 14, 2012 7:07 pm

I lost my backpack which had my netbook in it yesterday.

I will probably order a new one early this coming week, but could use any advice or recommendations you are willing to give (except Animavore).

My basic requirement is as cheap as possible, without sacrificing minimum quality. My previous was a low-end Acer Aspire One. I'm thinking Asus or Acer, but have yet to do any research.

I'm not opposed to something like a galaxy tab, but being handicapped and possessing only one finger to work with, a tabby is unlikely.

Bummer about losing the netbook ... was it insured? :ask:

Any, netbooks appear to have had their day IMHO, being squeezed by Ultrabooks on on side and tablets on the other. In what's left of the netbook market, you'll pay a bit more for something with an Atom N2600 or N2800, and maybe USB 3.0 as well. But other than that, netbook specs have changed very little in the past year.

I'll look at ultras, but I suspect both bang for the buck, absolute bang (features) and absolute buck (price) won't be there. No, it wasn't insured.

It isn't. If you look at the specs you are paying up to twice as much for a bit less weight. I don't find lugging a kilo or so less around worth the money myself. I would rather pay the same amount for something heavier with more grunt

I'm working up the courage to swap my second monitor (a Dell server monitor) with a KDS monitor which I inherited from my ex-friend (aka "Korean Donkey Shit").

I've got a Samsung Sens NC108. Slow as fuck. Don't get one of those.

Well, I made one more round at the stores near where I lost it (that was in 1990, iirc). I left my name and number at the most likely stores.

I'm free to order new parts (a process which, given my meticulous thoroughness regarding completeness and research, is a process which could take a few days to a few weeks). In the meantime, I should kit my nook color and use it as my mobile device until the replacement parts arrive. I've got a book club tonight which is reading an anthology of selections from Darwin, which I haven't read, and so likely will skip. And I have a philosophy group on Wednesday. So the bulk of the process likely won't start in earnest until Thursday.

Meanwhile, I feel like watching Aliens or Marvel Avengers (which just arrived) on Blu-ray. Technology can wait.

Oh, and I'm currently double timing internet service providers. I wanted to evaluate the new provider while retaining the second, and maintaining, during any changeover. Well, the problems with my connection did not clear with switching to a new provider (intermittent massive packet loss, especially under load). But I'm sufficiently pleased with the new service, all the same. (Customer relations and customer support at the old had turned to shit after being bought out by some global assholes. I needed to pop a panel on the modem on Sunday, to swap ethernet cables. I called the new provider, got a quick response, and friendly and competent help. None of this "trouble ticket hell" from the old provider. Not to mention, the old advertises service 24/7, but when you call outside of 9-5 M-F, you get a message saying they're closed [they're such fuck ups at there now; at one time, they were the pre-eminent ISPs in the state, and regarded as one of the best in the world]; oh how the mighty are fallen).

Anyway, so I emailed the new provider to bump me up to their maximum bandwidth, which is four times what I could even get at the old. And it ends up being cheaper overall. I'm currently using the old provider's pipe as I'm in the process of cycling all my passwords (unprotected password file on the netbook), and I emailed the new provider just to reset them and that I would follow up afterward. Internet is surprisingly nondescript when you're not twiddling with the knobs or experiencing issues.

Asus Eee PC. Dirt cheap. Gets the job done well. Linux runs great on it.

I think when they come inspect my apartment this morning, they're going to conclude that I custom order my computer cases specifically without side panels — out of about 10 machines, 4 running, 6 not, not a single one has all the side panels installed. The only machine with side panels properly installed is one I inherited from my ex-friend and never got around to fucking with.
