How's my driving? Call: SSN-765

Oh dear, someone may be spending a lot of time ashore after this.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

The blood will spill when the repair bill gets totted up.

How the fuck do you crash a nuclear attack submarine into a cruiser? Or vice versa? They aren't exactly small.

~600 feet each, IIRC. The circumstances of the collision aren't available yet, are they? I can see a completely accidental collision, and a collision due to inattention by one or more parties, and something in between.

Hmmm, pity the AEGIS cruiser doesn't have some sort of radar that would have allowed it to see if there were anything nearby.

I think you over-simplify the issue. They could have been practicing high-lining and a rouge wave pushed them together.

(High-lining: Transferring men or material from one ship to another while underway. Used to get sick men off one ship onto another one (with better medical personnel, for example). )

I know that there are a number of rational explanations for why they may have collided, but since no one was hurt it's more fun to wonder which ship had the helmswoman.

That would be the Aegis, I don't think they have women on nuke subs yet? Anyway, if it was the sub the helmsman wasn't "driving", he/she was just following orders from the sail.

:nono:

As I opined earlier, I blame Al-Qaeda. They can no longer fly planes into buildings, so instead they fly ships into subs.

I was slightly alarmed to read a few years ago that modern submarines don't have to rely on any external information (satellites, triangulation etc.) to calculate their position and depth because they have to be able to operate in an environment where the infrastructure for such things has been destroyed. They therefore have a virtual model of the world on the computers and use internal info concerning speed etc to calculate where they are. This struck me at the time as inherently prone to error!

From memory, they try to confirm their dead-reckoning position by other means as often as they can. In a war-time situation, that might be much less frequent, of course...

But they should certainly know where surface vessels are, via passive sonar...
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

This is what happens when you put stealth ships against stealth submarines. No-one has a bloody clue where anything is.

Would be rude to deny it.
