I would worry if I thought the country was worth less than the person in question. That would be stupid. But I've had to order men to doing things that we all knew would get them killed. Not probably killed, not likely to be killed, certain to be killed. They didn't volunteer, they waited with everybody else to see who I would pick. Nasty thing for a 22 yo to have to do, but if I didn't make the call we'd have all been dead. Not a happy memory.

And I still see their faces, almost every night.

There are many kinds of betrayal. The popular image tends to be of a betrayal that results in myriad deaths, but such are rare. Much more likely is a betrayal that embarrasses a politician, or sends the fate of the country onto a slightly different path.

Look at the USA. You had your war of independence. It was associated with lots of lies and propaganda, as those things always are, in order to persuade the naive to become cannon fodder. From this time comes the much over-rated American ideal of 'liberty', and the weird belief (held by some Americans) that only the USA is truly free. However, if a betrayer had caused the young USA to lose that war, and it remained a part of the British Empire, it would simply have ended up more like Canada. A part of the current British Commonwealth, but free and independent and wealthy.

Most betrayals are not truly that damaging.

I'm pretty sure that the way Canada and other British possessions ended up had a lot to do with the fact that Britain lost the revolutionary war the way it did.
