Hugo Chavez re-elected!!!

 great news! Was hoping for this! Great voter turnout as well!

Fireworks exploded in downtown Caracas, and Chavez's supporters celebrated waving flags and jumping for joy outside the presidential palace.

Chavez won more than 7.4 million votes, beating Capriles by more than 1.2 million votes, Lucena said.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Even if Chavez turns out not to be the egomaniacal totalitarian dictator that I consider him to be, and even if he would have accepted a fair and democratic vote - and stepped down if he lost it, and even if he truly is a champion of the people*, consider this.

If and when he steps down, or dies in office, he will be replaced. Because he has removed safeguards from the constitution designed to prevent the rise of totalitarian dictators, he may be replaced by one easily at any time. He is a danger to his people on this basis alone.

*misguided at how to achieve economic prosperity for all the people.

Sandi's back!!!

If any successor of Chavez gets out of line, Evo will go over there, challenge the person to a football match and give him a good swift kick in the bollocks. :hehe:

In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. The Pope was today knocked down at the start of Christmas mass by a woman who hopped over the barriers. The woman was said to be, "Mentally unstable."

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

Two things surprise me about Venezuela. It's as bad off as it is even with all that oil income, and the crime/murder rate is incredibly high.
Chavez may love his socialism, but he is just too incompetent to run a country.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

They go on here about Brazil and other South American countries becoming huge economic powers. Do a google maps and streetview of bits of Rio only a couple of miles from the city centre and it looks like a dirt poor third world country even now. Not to put it down - but we dismiss our own achievements rather too easily I fancy.

I'm glad to hear it.

There is so much crap in the media about Chavez and Venezuela, mainly because most of the press is right-wing and rabid.
The people who KNOW, the people living there, obviously know what's really going on, and think he's doing a good job.

It just proves what bollocks the right-wing media try to feed us, and it's amazing that some people on this site just soak it up without bothering to read between the lines, or look at the motivation of the press.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

I'm not at all convinced.

1. Changing the law to allow him to have multiple terms of office smacks of the good old "President for Life" caper.

2. He confiscated land from farmers and distributed it to people who hadn't the first clue about agriculture.

Regarding the second point - if he is going to steal land and give it to people, he should first require that they attend training and demonstrate competence before being sent off into the country, (usually for the first time in their lives).

Chavez strikes me as a demagogue of little actual competence.
