Brianna Demato, a 15-year-old student at Newton High School in Queens, N.Y. was sent home Tuesday because school officials deemed her "I Enjoy Vagina" T-shirt too distracting.

The bisexual teen says the school violated her rights to free speech, and her mother is standing behind her.

"It's hypocritical," Brianna told the New York Daily News. "They use the word in class -- why can't I, on a shirt?"

Well, I tell ya, there is nothing dirty about the word vagina, but I file this under the "be careful what you wish for," label. If she's allowed to wear that shirt, then boys can wear it too. And, what would stop someone from wearing "suck on penises" or "have sex with anuses" in school.

I'm pro free speech, nearly absolutely so, but a school has to be able to set a dress code. Maybe the only way to do it is to say "no writing at all on shirts" and such. That would be content neutral.

I don't get the parent here, though. FFS -- you're "standing behind" your daughter wearing an "I enjoy Vagina" t-shirt? Take the t-shirt away and tell her to concentrate on her school work. She's 15. That's a little young to be enjoying all sorts of vagina all over the place, isn't it?

I'll never forget the day my friend was made to wear his t-shirt inside out because some teachers found it offensive and sent him to the front office. It was a drawing of Betty Boop, as seen from behind, kneeling down right in front of a very happy-looking Gumby. There might've been a lewd comment from Gumby written on the shirt, I'm not sure.

I thought our fellow 13-yr olds could deal with it just fine, but in the end he fought the law and the law won. Bummer.

I would add, the shirt doesn't really refer to an organ of a woman's body, but implies a sexual act, and thus may be deemed an obscenity for violating community standards. (Maybe.)

You think that shirt in picture format would be less problematic?

I'm not sure of the different ages of kids in schools in the US - are there going to be kids younger than say, eleven seeing it? That's the only reason I can see why it could be an issue for some people.

There's nothing wrong with schools having uniforms or some degree of appropriate dress code, as long as it's sensibly and fairly handled. I can only assume this has somehow been blown out of all proportion in order for it to become news.

Uniforms are a step too far, but that young lady had already gone somewhat further than that anyway... It's fine to enjoy one's sexual preference (Assuming she's not of the BUG persuasion), advertising it in such a manner goes beyond taste and is indeed actually disruptive.

Good taste. and teenagers are obsessed with sex enough without putting add'l reminders right on a girl's chest.
Not to mention the trouble that could be caused if some gayphobes decide to react to it.

the fact it hasn't caused problems isn't a reason to let it go on. it's still a risk factor, and at best causes distraction and loss of attention.
