New Dredd film is.... awesome? :?

Post by Animavore » Thu Sep 13, 2012 3:08 pm

:?

Everyone is raving about this right now. Even the critics have rated it high scoring 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. I honestly could never have predicted by the trailer that this would be anything more than pants.

Who has seen it? Does it stay close to the source material? Is yer man, what's-his-face, any good as Dredd?

I sure hope it's good I really want to see it. I do enjoy Judge Dredd. I hope the dark judges are in it too.
Maybe if it is good they'll make more!

I wasn't expecting that. More like a 15% on RT. I mean it has Karl Urban leading and the last movie he starred in that I remember was Doom. And Doom was shit!

The movie isn't released until a week...at least here in the good ol USA, the only place that counts, so I'd expect the ratings to drop.

I watched the 90s one recently in anticipation of the new one. I really do hope it's good.... Judge Dredd and 2000 AD were among the few comics I read and enjoyed in my tens.

JD famously never took his helmet off in the comics. The fatal flaw of the 90s film was they hired a star (Stallone!) who by the very nature of stardom had to show his face. They lasted ten minutes into the film before he took it off!

I hope they manage it better in the new one.

No Dark Judges in this one but check this out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dredd#Sequel
At the London Film and Comic Con in July 2012, Garland said that a North American gross in excess of $50 million for Dredd would potentially allow for sequels. Garland said that he had plans for a trilogy of films with a second film focusing on the origins of Dredd and his city, and a third introducing Dredd's nemesis, the undead Judge Death and his Dark Judges. In August 2012, he also mentioned that a Judge Dredd television series would be a positive future step for the series. In September 2012, Garland further expanded his sequel concepts. He said that he would explore the "Origins" and "Democracy" storylines and introduce the villains Judge Cal and Chopper. He also said that he would pursue the concept that Judge Dredd is a fascist. Also in September, Macdonald said that further films would be made in partnership with IM Global and would likely be again shot in South Africa.
Good reasons to go see it me thinks.

I doubt it could top that theatrical masterpiece Demolition Man.

Funny you should mention that. Rachel and I both got the plots of Demolition Man and Judge Dredd completely mixed up. They came out within a few months of each other I think, and both had Stalone playing himself.

Very similar genres, except one is a classic and the other quite forgettable.
