sell your sterility/fertility
I asked this on RDF a long while back and it came up again in conversation.
It was proposed thus:-
Given planet overpopulation,
Government(s) should offer a sum of money to anyone willing to be sterilised.
Good/bad? why?
How much?
Any additional caveats?

I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain

How much money? I'll do a whole lot of things if it'd pay for all of Sprog's schooling.

Re: sell your sterility/fertility
Sorry Kristie/Hades/bella IIRC the intial concept was for males/females who had not yet become parents.

The intial sum was quoted at £50,000
However in the recent discussion a 'sliding scale' dutch auction type suggestion was made i.e. start with a low quote and gradually increase the offer until the correct? level of population is achieved.
It seems both perfect and iffy. But I don't know why.
Unfortunatley I can't remember the course of the thread on RDF.

You would be willing to give up the chance to have kids. Interesting.Twoflower wrote:colubridae wrote:Sorry Kristie/Hades/bella IIRC the intial concept was for males/females who had not yet become parents.

My first wife and I had an abortion when we were much younger of course!
So I don't know if I would/should qualify.
Also whether there should be upper and lower age limits?

Re: sell your sterility/fertility
The way I have always seen it is if I ever wanted kids I would rather adopt then have my own. I have no interest in giving birth or being pregnant. It just isn't something that I am interested in, either is having my own flesh and blood child, or any child for that matter.
I don't know about upper and lower age limits. I would not think anyone under the age of 21 should be allowed to do it just because they are still very young and might not think it through. I suppose the upper age limit for women would be menopause. Not sure for men though.

My first wife and I didn't want kids. Too selfish, we just got careless that one time.Twoflower wrote:The way I have always seen it is if I ever wanted kids I would rather adopt then have my own. Second wife feels the same. I guess we lack empathy? or something.
I honestly have never regretted our decision.
All our friends have had kids and many are now grandparents. But they’ve all gone through crisis after crisis with their kids and survived with a smile. But any one of those crises would have floored me and wiped me out.

How about we stop paying for people's kids first?

Too problematic. The idea is to 'avoid' the problem of unwanted/accidental kids before it occurs.Drewish wrote:How about we stop paying for people's kids first?

Re: sell your sterility/fertility
I am also too selfish to want kids of my own. I like to be able to do whatever I want when I want to without being tied down. I really like kids and want to be a youth librarian and work with them, I just also like it when they go home.colubridae wrote:My first wife and I didn't want kids. Would you exclude people who have already reproduced? I doubt those who want to have kids will be tempted by a little bit of money. Sometimes carrots aren't enough, you need sticks too.colubridae wrote:Too problematic.
