Rum, WTF? The same rule applies in the US. It's required by law. If an ambulance is coming, you have to pull over and out of the way immediately. If a police officer has someone pulled over on the side of the road, the rule is that you have to move one lane over to go by them.
Heck, if a school bus stops at a bus stop, it's illegal to pass it.

Well I have never been to NY. I was responding to Trinity's comment here: http://rationalia.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 9#p1255037Coito ergo sum wrote:Rum, WTF? The same rule applies in the US. This is 100% correct. Traffic in NY --- on Fifth Avenue and 34th street all the way up to the Park, which is I think like 59th street on the south side - it's always wall-to-wall cars. And, wall to wall people on the sidewalks. This is a big city, folks, and that's Mid Town Manhattan.Kristie wrote:That's the way it is in the city I live in, and the one before that. I think the problem with New York is more about traffic congestion, there's no where to pull over to!Rum wrote:An interesting difference here (in th UK). My kids and I were in that same place a few weeks ago. NYPD taking so long to arrive is not so much (in my opinion) them actually being slack, but the crammed roads full of drivers not really giving a shit about a cop car trying to get through (I witnessed this a multitude of times whilst I was visiting there)

The city does make a difference. Where I live, you can always just pull off into a cornfield!Coito ergo sum wrote:This is 100% correct. Police response times in NYC are very good. Here, there were cops there almost immediately.Rum wrote:Well I have never been to NY. Yes, cop cars were trying to get there through the traffic, but where would you and/or trinity have the traffic go? It's not as if the cars can get over to the side, but are purposefully not going over there.
And, you phrased it as if this is some "difference" between the US and the UK. It's not a difference. I daresay that Brits in a traffic jam will have a difficult time pulling over when there is no space to pull over too. This is why I go "on about" these kinds of posts -- this is a prime example. You had to make it a slur against Americans. The "difference" is, of course, that Americans don't give a fuck about crime victims and cops/ambulances trying to get through, meaning that in the UK, they, of course, do care about such things. Can you understand how condescending and insulting that is?

Indiana cornfields are nice. I spent a few summers running around in them.
As for the shooting, what's the current thinking on why these people always feel the need to kill complete strangers?

I should have stated that too; I saw clearly in NY City that there was nowhere for the police cars to go (as I have also seen in parts of London without mowing people down on the paths) and in a lot of instances, people did try to make room but a lot of people (taxi drivers were the worst) just completely ignored the sirens or didn't attempt to find a way out of the way! I actually found New Yorkers to be incredibly friendly, accommodating and helpful but there's no doubt about it, there's not enough space. Not even enough room to install an "emergency vehicles only" lane like we have bus and cycle lanes over here-it's a free for all.
Here's to Now.
