Re: Shooting Outside Empire State Building
In this day and age, and in a environment with ready access to firearms ... TBH, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more than it does.
Work is not just "work" for many people. It's accounts for a lot of their social interactions, emotional time, how they view themselves, etc. If someone thinks they've been treated unfairly (and whether they're right or not, it happens a lot), then expect a lot of pent-up anger in many cases.

Relative to Afghanistan, for instance.

Why yes, it does. Also laws against shooting employers and fellow employees. Interestingly, and most quizzically, the shooter ignored all of those laws. Imagine that.laklak wrote:Hang on, doesn't New York have strict gun laws?!
And, in the time that it took the ever-present and ubiquitous NYPD officers to arrive, ten people were shot.
Seems to confirm my theory that when some deranged shooter starts shooting up the place you don't have six minutes to wait for the police, you don't have sixty seconds, you don't have six seconds, you might have six-tenths of a second to do something to save your life...like pulling your lawfully-carried concealed handgun and shooting the deranged gunman dead...long before the police ever get there.
And that's WHY I carry a concealed handgun every single day.

I guess it's never as simple as one reason for people doing such things. It's often a culmination of pressures (coupled with a fragile emotional constitution) and then the "final straw". I'm not excusing the act-it's horrific when something like this happens. My kids and I were in that same place a few weeks ago. NYPD taking so long to arrive is not so much (in my opinion) them actually being slack, but the crammed roads full of drivers not really giving a shit about a cop car trying to get through (I witnessed this a multitude of times whilst I was visiting there)

An interesting difference here (in th UK). If a police car or ambulance is trying to get through traffic and they have their sirens on everyone pulls over to the side or makes room one way or another. Not sure what that says. To Seth, probably that we are drones of the state and brainwashed to cooperate with 'the authorities'.Trinity wrote:I guess it's never as simple as one reason for people doing such things. That's the way it is in the city I live in, and the one before that. I think the problem with New York is more about traffic congestion, there's no where to pull over to!Rum wrote:An interesting difference here (in th UK).
