Actually, statistically, most gun owners in the USA are male.
This reflects the basic motive for owning a gun, which is the sense of power it gives. People rationalise their motives (see my signature), and make spurious claims about self defense and being ready to fight totalitarian governments, but the real reason, as opposed to rationalisation, is that guns confer a feeling of power, which makes the owner feel good. In other words, it is all about emotion.

Women, of course, share many male vices. But as a general rule, they feel less need for power and power displays, which is why fewer ever bother to buy guns.

I own a S&W .40 semi-automatic handgun. I've had it for five years. I keep it in a keypad-activated safe in my bedroom, and only my wife and I know the combination. I bought it brand new, and it has never been fired.

That should be enough information for me to draw criticism from people on both sides of this debate.

I know you've been to the range, so you've had some safety training. You can depend on the S&W to work when you need it to work. But what about your wife, what's her status re handguns?
