There's an argument there?
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

yes, he is arguing that he is paying his fair share, because he pays as much in taxes as approximately 48 schoolteachers. Is he?

This is something I've thought about too. The top 5% in the US pay more than 50% of the federal income taxes, while reporting about 1/3 of the total income. So, is that not their fair share? And, if not, what would be the fair share of the top 5%?

That is what he's getting at.

Well, he pays taxes like 48 schoolteachers... now, how many schoolteachers does he earn as much as?

....implicit in his statement is that it would be some number short of 48, since the rate goes higher as incomes go up.

It's only because we agree to a low salary that they are rich. We should just tax 80%. Boy are we stupid.

I think we should all pay 100%. Then the gummint can decide exactly how much money we all need and distribute it fairly.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

And in terms of any actual practical effects upon his life (as opposed to his narcissistic obsessing over it) he probably misses that money a hell-of-a-lot less than any of them do.
People like this notice and are annoyed at the amount of money they lose in tax purely because they make the conscious effort to notice it and to be annoyed.

Teachers may pay far less in tax, but when they notice what they're paying it's because they're struggling to balance their finances, and finding their tax bill impacts that. If this 'Adam Carolla' character is finding his tax bill impinging on his lifestyle (which I actually doubt - he probably just enjoys bitching about it) that undoubtedly says far more about his lifestyle than his tax bill.

Also doesn't that fact this turd gets so much money in the first place rather blow a hole in the concept of meritocracy (or at least redefines 'merit' beyond anything recognisable to most reasonable people).

So... he isn't paying his fair share? Or, is he?

If not, what is his fair share?

Depends on who your asking. If you're asking a rational adult, he's paying far more than his fair share and the bottom 50 percent of the population, which isn't paying anything at all, are the tax cheats.

If you ask a socialist, 200 percent taxation is not enough for the "wealthy" because they deserve to be punished for taking more than their "fair share" in the first place, and the bottom 50 percent who pay no taxes feel justified in paying no taxes because there are wealthy people out there they can leech off of to provide largess for the dependent class. Which works fine until all the rich folks have been driven off or sucked dry, then the whole system collapses of its own weight because everybody feels entitled to get stuff from government without having to pay for it.
