The Hobbit will be Three Films, not Two

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Peter J

Oh, and the same for splitting The Hobbit in three even though the material clearly isn't there . If Jackson applied the same philosophy to LOTR, we'd have had about 12 4-hour movies.

What's wrong with that? People complain there wasn't enough of the book in the LOTR movies. Others complained there was too much. Fuck both.

He can make The Hobbit into as many films as he wants, I won't be seeing a single bit of his crap.

As a fellow person who has been forced to see movies I didn't want to see, you have my full sympathy.

There are about six natural endings in the book:

The defeat of the trolls.
The escape from the goblin lair.
The rescue by eagles.
The escape from the elves' prison.
The defeat of Smaug.
The actual end of the book.

I figure the three films will end with 2, 4, & 6, but you never know with someone who loves the source material as much as Jackson and crew. The ways he/they improved on the LOTR source material were remarkable.

Did you say "improve"?  :lay:

There are a few shortcuts he took that I do agree he managed pretty well (though I had to wait for the extended version, If I had had only the theatrical cut, I'd have decreed LotR one of the worst cinematic crimes of all times and possibly acted on my urge to see Jackson and crew impaled Vlad Tepes and the Turkish army style)...

OTOH, even though I recognize some of the things he did, and find them an elegant solution to the problem, there are other things he did that make me want to slap him with a rotten flounder, him and everybody involved in getting the particular bit into the final cut... and if I get the writer who designed the cave troll scene in Moria, NOTHING is going to save that fucker's skin.

This said, I do wonder if there is so much good stuff that you do have to make it a trilogy rather than keep it a two parter.

169 minutes, isn't that short:ask: Off to see it with the family in ten. Quite interested in the 3D HDR too, it has gotten some very mixed reviews.

The 2nd and 3rd movies will be largely taken from the appendices. This means I might have to read them. :coffee:

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.
