Horizon. Dumbing down?

Post by Rum » Mon Jul 30, 2012 8:56 pm

Always been a fan as it tries to explain sciency stuff to those of us thickos who don't understand some of that stuff.

Watching a Horizon about the Mars landing on 6th August and they opened up with referring to Mars as the Bermuda triangle of planets because so many missions there have failed. More in that sort of tone sadly. Either Horizon has dumbed down or I am not as big a thicko as I used to be... :ask:

I'm really excited about the landing though. Human beings have done some astonishing stuff!

I don't watch often, but when I do, I end up thinking that the whole programme, in terms of what they actually tell us, could be fit into about 10 minutes if they ignored the repeats, music and graphics. Not every time, but...

They do tend to follow the well trodden pattern: tell them what you are going to tell them; tell them it; tell them what you told them; summarise and repeat!

I've recorded this, so I'll watch it at the earliest opportunity and post my thoughts here.

A couple of years ago, it did seem to be really dumbing down, but it did seem to have recovered somewhat over the last year or so. It can still be a bit hit-and-miss though.

We have had threads on this before - and it's definitely true - but if it gets a few more people interested in science that wouldn't be otherwise, it is a good thing. There is plenty of proper, hard sciency stuff out there for those that get a taste for it.
