Re: The Olympics thread
All ceremonies are shit. A big con. But people love it. Especially women.
What is a ceremony? It's a sales technique. Designed to make something fairly ordinary seem important.
That's why religions and governments use them extensively.
People like the ceremony experience, and so they use that to deliver a message that would otherwise be hard to sell.
Adolf Hitler used ceremony better than anybody in history, he could never have got his country to follow him into war without all the invented ceremony.
The Olympics use ceremony to sell the idea that these sports are interesting. Most are not, they are incredibly boring, unless you are personally involved with them. But they sell it all on nationalistic instinct, so even if you don't really give a toss about who can pedal his bicycle fastest, you care because your "champion" might beat their champion.
It's a warfare substitute, and hardly anybody gets killed.
But what the fuck? Who cares? Hardly anybody gets killed, so it's pretty harmless these days.

While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

There was a bit of Moody Blues which fit the scene and the singalong was way too long.- took away from an otherwise excellent pacing and spectacle.

"Hey Jude" has the great advantage of not requiring any working knowledge of English to sing along to ... just "NA-NA-NA NA-NA-NA-NAH" [/repeat ad infinitum]PordFrefect wrote:What?? Why not 'imagine' or 'rocky raccoon'??
"Rocky Raccoon" would have been good though.

And Pink Floyd did manage to make an appearance, as the flame was being lit.
Only 15 minutes into this morning's coverage on the BBC, and we got our first bit of Women's beach volleyball.

Meanwhile, the crowds at the rowing regatta are truly enormous.

I for one was very impressed by the opening ceremony. I am as prone to cynicism as anyone here - maybe more so - but the sheer imagination, creativity and quirkiness of the ceremony impressed me enormously.

I suspect it's down to giving the project over to an individual to mastermind, rather than a committee.Rum wrote:I for one was very impressed by the opening ceremony. Sorry.. You vill tell me vot you meant Englander!!!
(I didn't get what you were trying to say.)
you put a pound sign on the amount and used the word ‘quid’. I was nitpicking and you've completely outmanoeuvred me, so now my mildly amusing nitpicking lies all around me on the floor, in tatters.

I am not an Englander. I am Velsh. Dammit, I mean welsh.

I have a well balanced personality. I've got chips on both shoulders
