'The truth' can and should be expressed rather more carefully if you want to be President of the United States I would suggest. The man comes over as a rather awkward buffoon to me. Still perhaps that is what the average Merican wants in their president.Coito ergo sum wrote:Only if you don't listen or read what he said, and go by the retarded headlines. Come on Brits, you're supposed to be smarter than we Americans are.Rum wrote:He created an extraordinarily bad impression. This wasn't the only slip. He called Ed Milliband, the leader of the Labour party 'Mr Leader' LOL!Coito ergo sum wrote:Of course, he didn't do any griping at all. The quote is pretty reasonable. There WERE disconcerting signs, but he didn't say the Olympics wouldn't come off well.Ian wrote:It's the difference between fretting with your spouse over how your house looks before guests show up to a dinner party while you're working to get everything ready, and one of the guests coming in and griping about it after they've arrived.
But I'm not really worried about the Olympics - those Anglo-Saxons know how to organize and pull things together.

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/piers-morgan ... the-truth/Piers Morgan Defends Romney’s Olympics Comments: ‘He Was Just Speaking The Truth’“It’s no secret over here that for the last three weeks the security around the Olympics has been a shambles,” said Morgan. “The outside firm they got in to run it has been all over the place – they didn’t have enough people and the army had to be drafted in. So, Mitt Romney was only saying exactly what has been happening.”
“He’s run an Olympics, so I thought he was perfectly entitled to be critical,” Morgan continued. He said that the English press jumped on him because they wanted Romney to “talk us up a bit,” but the substance of Romney’s critique was on point.
“I thought it was a bit of a fuss about nothing,” said Morgan. “He was just speaking the truth which can sometimes be rather unpalatable.”

The truth was expressed in a careful, measured way. There was nothing wrong with what he said, unless you have an agenda to make it out to be something it wasn't. Which maybe is what the average Brit likes to do. It's total nonsense, which is probably what the average Brit enjoys when it comes to politics.

Oh relax. I'm sure this isn't something that's going to affect the election. Not-Obama's Mitt Romney's numbers will be the same next week as they are now.Coito ergo sum wrote:It's only "spin" that calls this a gaffe. If it were Obama, I'd be defending him on this one. Don't worry, he'll be in Israel next. And Israel is probably the only country on earth that prefers to see Republicans in the White House.
Come on, Ian...
Perception is very important, as is personality. I'm just enjoying knowing that Obama went to Europe in 2008 and among other things spoke to a quarter million cheering Germans, whereas Mitt Romney goes to the UK and the story is that nobody's going to be sorry to see him leave.

Actually the average Brit knows perhaps a bit more about American politics than visa versa given its size and importance, but not an awful lot more.Coito ergo sum wrote:Probably the depth of the average Brit's knowledge.Rum wrote:Well I do have an agenda. But then I am not average, at least in that respect.

Works for me. We're not debating in-depth policy here.

Yeah, definitely with CES on this one... It took me several minutes of following links just to find what Romney even said in the first place. All the "news" is about brits' reactions to it and no one has bothered to address what he actually said.
It's all a bunch of "nyah nyah" schoolyard nonsense.

Well we like Obama and as a rule the democrats. Given their record, especially Bush's, and the perception that Blaire because his poodle the Brits get a bit nervous about the Republicans.Ian wrote:Yep.cogwheel wrote:Yeah, definitely with CES on this one...
