All depends on where you live. We're only a mile or so from the "projects", the place where the two British tourists were killed a year or so ago for walking down the wrong street. However, we have no crime in our neighborhood, because it's full of pickup trucks, boats, big dogs and rednecks. One look and any self-respecting criminal would realize this is a street where guns live. There's more firepower on our three streets than in most armories. However, I don't go into the projects for any reason whatsoever and there are other areas of town I would not want to be without a weapon. To me that's just common sense. My life is worth more, to me, than theirs is. And, if I'm perfectly honest, so is my property. I realize that's not a PC attitude, but my philosophy is "rob somebody else".
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I consider this shooting some form of terrorism - a personal type, driven by insanity perhaps, but this person had to have something motivating them to kill a bunch of strangers in a movies theater. What it was, we don't know yet.
I don't consider that terrorism, because personal motives aren't included in the definition.

I'm sorry but that just seems ridiculous. Who are you.. James Bond, Jason Bourne? Why on earth would you need a gun in day-to-day life? I've walked around cities on my own at night.. London, Tokyo, New York, Chicago (to name but a few)... I've never felt in any way that I need a gun for any reason. Are you telling me you'd take a gun to a picnic in the park?

I prefer to live not expecting to be raped and murdered by every person I see. If it does happen I doubt a gun would do much anyway but I'd rather not have to carry such a thing .. I'm not so much of a pessimist
I wholeheartedly agree.

I wonder if mozg has been to many of those places, since he/she can't take their Glock with them. If they can't trust Americans enough that they have to walk around life packing a Glock, why would they trust foreigners?

You're much more likely to get killed just walking anywhere in Florida getting hit by a car, than murdered by someone for walking around in the projects. And no gun will help you there.

The only place in the U.S. I haven't felt safe walking at night was the campus and surrounding area of college. There are about 17 sexual assaults and rapes per week on campus that were reported, it was understood if you chose to walk alone at night in certain areas of campus your risk of being sexually assaulted went up. I didn't carry a gun though, just pepper spray.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

I would say that the idea of taking it as far as not going places where you can't bring a gun is extreme. I carry a gun most days, because I work in a shit neighborhood and have had a few close calls. However, whether I carry outside of work or not mostly depends on convenience. I am very strict about either keeping it on my person or in the safe, and outside of work, it is sometimes just that much more convenient to carry it than it is to bother putting it in the safe. Conversely, if it is in the safe to start, I oftentimes won't bother with getting it out, especially if its a quick run to 7-11 or if I will be going somewhere that requires me to disarm. I will agree with mozg on PREFERRING to patronize places I know to support my right to carry concealed, over other options that choose to restrict it. But at the end of the day it simply isn't something that I am willing to change my lifestyle to accommodate.

But anyway .. who would walk around the projects? I don't go for a stroll in Moss side of an evening nor would I ever. I used to live in a fairly shitty part of Manchester (Salford actually) but like everywhere you just exercise caution. No need to carry a gun.

The two people laklak referred to killed were British Tourists. I'm afraid that's just stupidity on their part. It's not hard to read up on where you're travelling to and know which areas to avoid etc etc. Common sense is the most important defense.

College campuses and their surrounds will often have a higher than usual incidence of rape and sexual assault, partly because of the disproportionally large numbers of young adults (many living away from home) in the population, and also because the population profile in turn makes them an attractive place for any serial rapist to target.

But 17 a week ... We have notices on certain paths on our campus as well here in Galway, but TBH even one reported assault is major news.

My college was a known party school. The most news a rape would get would be a small blurb in the local paper.

Like every city, there are parts that are safe, and other parts that are dangerous. You do need to exercise common sense - be around busy places with lots of people, take taxis instead of public transport in less crowded areas and late in the evenings.

I'm with you Ele - I too have traveled in cities like New York, Chicago, London, Paris and Venice (it can get rather freaky there at night with no roads to accomodate a speeding police car) and have always felt safe simply exercising good judgment, being self-aware as well as being aware of my surroundings, and being vigilant.
