It'd certainly be illegal with my homeowner's association...

Re: Inflation at the Grocery Store
we have an obesity epidemic and we're worried because there's not as much food?
Prices will go up a bit, but that's gonna be the worst of it.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I find it strange how many restrictions Merkins seem to have on what they can do in their private dwelling, given the whole "freedom of the individual" thing. I'm not saying there are no restrictions here, but what there are are imposed by councils rather than "home owner's associations". There would certainly be no restrictions on growing a veggie garden anywhere on your property...Bella Fortuna wrote:It'd certainly be illegal with my homeowner's association...

Yeah, it's wacky... but I do see how it evolved, if you've ever lived next to someone whose property is an eyesore - it's bad for the neighbourhood in terms of property value and perception.JimC wrote:I find it strange how many restrictions Merkins seem to have on what they can do in their private dwelling, given the whole "freedom of the individual" thing. Dunno, I think I'd rather live in Watts than in any place in an HOA or too near an HOA ruled area

My HOA means I get the use of a rather large pool, complete with lifeguards and snack bar. And tennis courts, and a playground, and manicured walking trails around the ponds behind my house, etc. I like it just fine.Svartalf wrote:Dunno, I think I'd rather live in Watts than in any place in an HOA or too near an HOA ruled area

Surely there's a balance. A front yard full of weeds, rubbish and rusting car parts is one thing, but a neat and productive veggie garden is not an eyesore...

I only get my front yard mowed and roofing & painting of the front on some cycle.

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

I've always liked Janeane Garofolo for her storming the Greenwich, CT beaches, when the whole town claimed the beaches for themselves, the ultimate HOA action:

Mine is exactly like Ian's, except I also get my full yard mowed, snow removal and there's a workout room at the clubhouse in front of the pool!Bella Fortuna wrote:Ian wrote:My HOA means I get the use of a rather large pool, complete with lifeguards and snack bar. Our homeowners association covers what councils do not. We're a little outlying from the county. Though the county and Pacific Gas and Electric company would have made it out eventually, it was my homeowners association that took care of the trees that fell in the street, and the tree that on the live power line to my house during the last big storm.JimC wrote:I find it strange how many restrictions Merkins seem to have on what they can do in their private dwelling, given the whole "freedom of the individual" thing. There's a few houses up the canyon that still have no direct car access because they can't afford to clear the landslide that fell on their private road.
The only restrictions we have about how our place looks is actually more of a practical one - that is that garbage cans need to be put out of sight behind a door. That's mostly due to the wildlife that gets into it. They're so smart, they manage to undo the bungee cord we have on ours on occasion.
And, Tyranny, if homeowner's associations are meant to keep people out, then why does this Christian homeowners association of mine tolerate me, with my Darwin fish and pirate flag outside?

I don't think people are worried about food as much as they are worried about the price of it. It's already higher due to gas prices.Robert_S wrote:we have an obesity epidemic and we're worried because there's not as much food?![]()

Oh, and beer...made with grain, those prices are going to get high too. We're talking about some people's drugs here.
