And I said "credible", not "statesman".

I spent 15 days in the US under GHB's presidency, and several months under Reagan, not to mention how reagan's hollywood style of gung ho politics affected production in my favorite hobby in the mid/late 80s... but I am happy I wasn't actually living there. Beside the fact the guy HAD managed to get elected as governor in California, and to top that with a two term presidency, I'd brand him a complete buffoon who was lucky not to completely bankrupt the country (or maybe he did and nobody noticed, because some of his works flowered only 20 years after he left Penn Avenue).

But that has nothing to do with credibility. People believed him when he spoke.

Then the word you're looking for is not credible, it's charismatic... Those people followed him like they'd follow a good preacher, not like responsible citizens decide to back a statesman who's dealing with the country's issues.

I used the word I meant to use.

Well, there you go again...
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

"Read my lips: no new taxes."

Bush the elder was a very nice guy and projected a statesmanlike persona, but he was just plain not that smart, and as a result made plenty of major mistakes.

Reagan was an actor. Of course he was credible. Credibility depends on slinging the bullshit, and who does that better than a trained actor?
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

A dreadful man. But his administration ended the Cold War (in essence) and for that I will always be grateful despite his stupid dreadfulness.
