Inflation at the Grocery Store
I don't have any real stats on this, but I go to the grocery store enough that I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that inflation in the US for food and necessaries is very high.
I was at the store yesterday and bought the "less expensive" tenderloin cut of meat, and it was $20 per pound. Ribeye steaks are generally like $14 a pound. And, even ground beef is from $3.50 per pound for the cheap stuff, and $5 and up for the "good stuff." The USDA Prime Tenderloin was like $40 a pound -- I think it was premium priced because of the "organic" nonsense label.
They're putting less in the containers. Those saltine cracker packages seem like they're not filing them up all the way with crackers anymore. Boxes are getting smaller. Prices are going up.
Butter -- to get regular butter now is like $4 a pound, and to get something really good is twice that.
A small bag or two of groceries these days is $50 minimum. I go to the supermarket and I know I can't get out of there for under that.
I am irate.

Yup.
This drought isn't going to be helping either...the cost of dairy (and heaven help us, cheese!
) is going to skyrocket.
Just picking up a couple of odds and ends is at least twenty bucks.

I spent $87 at the market last night, and hardly got anything! And I shopped at the cheapie place and mostly got things that were on special.

My family of 5 spends around $600 a month at the grocery, and I'm a careful shopper. I probably sent $60 or $70 just buying stuff to make goodies for the Train Wreck!

Re: Inflation at the Grocery Store
The only place with inexpensive groceries these days is the Aldi store (discount place where they don't have fancy shelves and displays and don't have as much of a selection - they make you put a quarter in the shopping cart to use one - and they don't give you shopping bags, you have to buy them). But, while the prices there are dirt cheap, everything is from friggin' China. I can't bring myself to eat food from China. I am prejudiced due to the reports of lead in toys, chinese dry wall, and all the tainted foods and medicines from China.

We have an Aldi, but it's on the other side of town. I figure with gas prices, it's not saving me much to go there. I prefer Meijer or Kroger. Absolutely hate Walmart and refuse to shop the unless absolutely necessary.Coito ergo sum wrote:The only place with inexpensive groceries these days is the Aldi store (discount place where they don't have fancy shelves and displays and don't have as much of a selection - they make you put a quarter in the shopping cart to use one - and they don't give you shopping bags, you have to buy them). I just bought a weeks worth of grocery's for about £25.00 ($39). I only have to shop for myself though.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

Aldi would save you a ton. It's like going back in time 20 years. You just have to be willing to ingest stuff from China.Kristie wrote:We have an Aldi, but it's on the other side of town. I don't object to Walmart in principle. But, I never liked grocery shopping there for some reason. I think they have a China issue too.

Bell peppers are three dollars a pound

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Have you folks checked out the deli counter lately?
Flippin' bologna was $6.99 per pound! And, if you want anything good, like roast beef, it's $10.99 per pound minimum. Even cooked ham is $8.99 per pound.

Believe me, I've been trying! I've got a couple left from the bunch I bought, which I will probably put to good use tonight. Happiness is a fresh banana.
