Depends how far you take it. I am suspicious of any view that goes to an extreme. Libertarianism celebrates personal freedom, which is all very fine and well. But too much removes social responsibility. You cannot have extreme personal freedom without social irresponsibility being there, at least in potential. For example : an extreme version of personal liberty is the right to drive while drunk.

Personal freedom must be limited in many ways in order to preserve that which is good for society as a whole.

Thoreau lived when you could move away from "civilization" and still be self-sufficient. Things have changed.

However, libertarianism generally emphasizes voluntary association as opposed to self-sufficiency. I don't think libertarianism implies that people are entirely self-sufficient.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism

I admit that my perception of Libertarians was badly flawed based on my interaction with badly flawed examples who claimed to be Libertarians.

My bad.

After reading the national platform of the Libertarian party, I'm reconsidering my perception.

I especially apologize to Laklak and Drewish for past statements I've made here. I could say that it was the booze talking, but we all know that's a weak excuse.
