I think libertarianism is misunderstood. I'm not a Libertarian, mainly due to the personalities of some folks who call themselves Libertarians. But, I do harbor many small "l" libertarian views.

The idea that libertarianism is somehow nefarious is surprising to me in its prevalence. It seems to be likened, by its opponents, to social darwinism and oppression of the weak by the strong. That accusation comes from the strange animal that is rampant these days, the oxymoron known as the authoritarian liberal. Somehow the liberal has morphed into something very similar to the statist conservative of the 1960s.

Some cool libertarians are guys like Henry David Thoreau, who wrote the seminal work "Civil Disobedience" back in the day. That is a must read, I think. Then move on to Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman and Murray Rothbard.
