Merican Olympyk uniforms - made in China!
Apparently the Merican Olympyk uniforms were made in China and Congress is all in a tizzy about it!
It is kind of embarrassing but do you really care? Is this a bad thing?

Apparently, the are made in China and the style is too European. I think all athletes should appear and compete in national dress.

Everything is either made in China or some FTZ where employment rights don't exist. It's not just Nikes.... most of the clothes you wear will have been put together in an FTZ, and your kids' school uniforms too.

I think the uniforms should have been made in the States. By unionized workers.
There's almost no way to avoid sweatshop-produced clothing in the general market, but these were custom-order. Seems ridiculous not to employ American workers to make what are in fact national costumes (someone mentioned that earlier as a joke, but that's exactly what they are.)
I don't care so much about the fascist-looking berets. Though I'm surprised Ralph Lauren didn't choose to go all Sundance Festival wealthy cowboy-- it's kind of what he's known for.

I am shocked!
Walmart would have been much cheaper and used the same sweatshops.

Wait, we're not supposed to be upset at China's humanitarian issue, low wages, child labor, poor working conditions, and the whole idea of outsourcing anymore?Rum wrote:Apparently the Merican Olympyk uniforms were made in China and Congress is all in a tizzy about it!

Walmart is a distributor, not a manufacturer.PordFrefect wrote:I am shocked!

But yes, the clothes in Walmart are made in sweatshops.
But so are the clothes in Nordstroms.
These clothes, however, are not off-the-rack, and could have been contracted to anyone. Theoretically at least. I don't know why the clothes were made in China. Maybe whoever's in charge of funding construction didn't budget for US workers.

Yes, 'twas a wee bit of a joke. 'Merkins get in a tizzy over their olympic uniforms, child labour in China, etc.. but Walmart is one of the most successful retailers in America.hadespussercats wrote:Walmart is a distributor, not a manufacturer.PordFrefect wrote:I am shocked!

In light of that, I have to agree with Rum: What's the problem?

Re: Merican Olympyk uniforms - made in China!
My guess is they issued RFPs for bids, and companies submitted bids. Chances are nobody asked the nationality of the bidders, because to accept or reject the bid based on national origin wold be discriminatory. The winning bid probably showed they had the capacity to handle the order, had the desired quality, and met the lowest or an acceptably low bid in light of their capacity and quality.hadespussercats wrote:
