Jewish and Muslim Outrage As Cologne Ban Circumcision!

European Jewish and Muslim groups have joined forces to defend circumcision for young boys on religious grounds after a German regional court ruled it amounted to bodily harm.

A joint statement says the practice is fundamental to their faiths and calls for it to be awarded legal protection.

The ruling by the Cologne court - also criticised by the Israeli parliament - does not apply to the whole of Germany.

But Germany's Medical Association told doctors not to perform circumcisions.

Thousands of Muslim and Jewish boys are circumcised in Germany every year.

The unusual joint statement was signed by leaders of groups including the Rabbinical Centre of Europe, the European Jewish Parliament, the European Jewish Association, Germany's Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs and the Islamic Centre Brussels.

As far as I can see, they haven't banned circumcision. They've banned doing it to people who are too young to consent. Let's see how many volunteer for it, as opposed to having it imposed on them.

Of course, this might be just the tip of a slippery slope.

The slippery slope was trod down on when it was decided to stop femmale genital cutting.
After that, ban of circumcision outside of clearly delimitated medical reasons was only a matter of time.
Now, I wonder how many Jews and muslims will willingly submit to the mohel 20 years from now when they have reached majority and can willingly get the op to be made formal members of their religion.

This will do nothing to stop Jews and Muslims goading their young boys into giving consent when they come of age and disowning those who don't. You have to remember that circumcision is a covenant with God in Judaism. For many you can't be a true Jew without it. Even converts are expected to get it (don't think this applies to Islam). I'm not fully sure this is the best way to tackle (no pun intended) this barbaric practice. And I do think it's barbaric, for those who will inevitability try play it down, up there with filing teeth, disfiguring feet and other forced rites of passage used by groups on their children in the past.

True but as you can't make it illegal to brainwash family members ( I would love to but its hardly practical) makitng illegal to mutilate children is the best we can do.

You can also make it count as cosmetic surgery which most national healthcare systems or even basic insurance won't cover
