I liked McCain, for the most part.

I was in McCain's camp in 2000.

I am fairly sure he would have gone into Iraq in 2003, though. I am, however, fairly sure that so would a third term Bill Clinton (theoretically), and Al Gore. And, a Hillary Clinton Administration would also have gone into Iraq. Very few Democrats would, in my opinion, have done something materially different.

We would have gone on the same war footing, and the Patriot Act would almost certainly have been enacted (evidence of that is that even under Obama and a fully Democrat controlled House and Senate, it wasn't repealed).

Probably, if Al Gore had been Prez in 2001, the Republicans would have characterized his administration as a third term of Clinton-Gore, and he would have been blamed for 9-11 happening and ignoring all the signs. Politically, Gore would have been compelled to act at least as aggressively as Bush did, or he would have been practically run out of office and there would have been calls for impeachment. And, the Republicans would have been pointing the finger at Gore for "lying" about weapons of mass destruction, etc.

Just think - the GOP could've nominated McCain in 2000. He too might've beat Al Gore, and then gone on to 8 yrs of a McCain administration. Instead, we got George W. Bush. Therefore, I have little problem proclaiming a great number of Republicans to be fucking stupid. They made McCain wait eight years behind Bush 43. Brilliant.

And, then when McCain ran in 2008, his record was smeared and besmirched unfairly by just about every Democrat. He went from being a valiant pilot and POW to a guy who supposedly made up most of his POW stories, and was a wild cowboy who could barely fly a plane.
