It's like most movies today, a series of gotcha scenes with an attempt to thread a 'story' through them.
I am SO disappointed in Ridley Scott letting the screenwriters pull this shit, and then filming it. He's one of the last 'auteur' directors who can actually pull that off. Not this time.
And yeah, I've read the producer's discussions. Even that is a setup for the sequels. Fuck telling a good story, let's string the audience along Lost style, and then justify the crap with after the fact mumbling.

Ah, but you haven't detected their evil plans. There will be at least two, if not more, "special editions" of this monster, each of which will contradict the others. And they'll all sell very well.

Movies must work for the audience 'in the moment' of the experience of watching them, IMO. After the fact explanations and dissections are an admittance of failure to tell a compelling story in the moment. Again, IMO.
The original Alien is a good example of one that hit the story groove and took you from here to there without any need for after the fact dissection or explanation.
The original Terminator did the same thing.
So did Jaws.
All three are examples of work by young directors who had the ability to set a story course and see it through.
