Is a Double Standard Ingrained in our Justice System?
Justice is not served in Soccer Mom Madam case
How come the johns, or clients never get busted?
Just to clarify, I believe prostitution should be legal.

I would want to know a lot more about the case, before criticising.
If the prostitutes are all free, willing, and over the age of consent, then it would seem to be incredibly harsh.
Unfortunately, prostitutes are often no more than slaves, imported from abroad and kept in fear as virtual prisoners, deliberately hooked on drugs, just to make their controllers rich.
And if any were under age, then she deserves all she gets.
Bail in cases like this often reflects the fact that the prostitutes can be intimidated, or even killed, to stop them from testifying.

The allegation was that is exactly the type of business she was running. The article is also not comparing like for like. Bail is about trust and risk, someone who is well off is more likely to receive a higher bail than someone who is poor. Besides if there is anything to the allegations that she had influential clientele seems like she may well be a more organised criminal than say some opportunistic hotel boys pimping the local crack addicts.mistermack wrote:I would want to know a lot more about the case, before criticising.

The charge itself may well be itself trivial, but they got Capone on tax evasion.

I was using this article as an example, but my more general question is, how come it's the prostitutes and the madams that get busted, but not the clients, like Charlie Sheen, Eliot Spitzer, etc?
It's not the case when it comes to drug crime...drug addicts get busted all the time.

They do get busted though don't they? What about that famous mugshot of Hugh Grant?
I can't really think of any others though.

I would make a distinction between men who have sex with free, consenting prostitutes, and those who have sex with exploited sex slaves.maiforpeace wrote:I was using this article as an example, but my more general question is, how come it's the prostitutes and the madams that get busted, but not the clients, like Charlie Sheen, Eliot Spitzer, etc?

If you have sex with someone who is under age, or some kind of prisoner, or someone who is controlled through fear, then you should be considered as aiding and abetting their exploitation, and prosecuted and sentenced accordingly.
And not knowing should be no excuse. If you don't know that the prostitute is freely consenting, then you should walk away.
But men who have sex with a freely consenting prostitute, I have no argument with. Nor with prostitutes who work freely for themselves.
Kerb crawling is illegal though, as it should be.

There's tons of statistics about prostitutes, but few about their clients. Considering that a prostitute probably has a number of clients, you would think there would be at least one john arrested for every prostitute arrested.Pappa wrote:They do get busted though don't they? - Although little research has been done regarding client profiles, anecdotal reports and arrest statistic indicate that clients also vary widely in terms of race and class. In a study in London, England 50% of clients were married, or cohabiting. According to Kinsey's report, 70% of adult men have engaged in prostitution at least once. Male prostitutes sometimes report that their clients include married men who identify as heterosexual. Customers are rarely arrested more than once for prostitution and are infrequently jailed.

Providers of illicit goods are always punished more than the consumers.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
