U.K. Places Anti-Aircraft Missiles Atop Homes As Summer Olympics Near
Residents of the Fred Wigg Tower and the Tower Hamlets, which will host High-Velocity missiles, had expressed concern about the batteries when the government made a test deployment of the missiles atop their buildings in early May. "I'm not sure I can sleep in a house knowing there are missiles on the roof," journalist and Tower Hamlets resident Brian Whelan told ABC News in May.

Huh. I think it would be awesome to have High-Velocity missiles on the roof at our apartments. I'd sleep well indeed.

Great is the power of ignorance.

Does this make the civilians living in those buildings viable targets?

They'll keep the army of pick pockets that will swam in for the Olympics well behaved no doubt.

I am thinking of installing mini-missiles on my roof, in the leafy eastern suburbs of Melbourne, to destroy the virtually inevitable terrorist attack on our little piece of paradise...
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!

You need barbed wire and ID checks to complete the idyllic scene old son.

Planting thorny bushes, and having trained squads of aggressive possums will be much more in keeping, I feel...

No extra deadly guard snakes and spiders? Not even a croc pond?

The snakes and spiders are simply automatic.
Unfortunately, Melbourne is too cold for crocs...

As with everything else in the Olympics, I wonder if the missile batteries are sponsored....These missiles are brought to you by Coca Cola and Halliburton, proud sponsors of Olympic security.

It's funny that they're afraid of having missiles on their roofs. It's the safest place to be, directly under the launcher.

Yes, but I'm not sure if a declared war is required. I'm not even sure it is legal to place missile systems on civilian buildings

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

If the tallest building around is a commercial structure and the military approaches the owner and gets permission to use the roof temporarily, what's the problem? Single family dwellings are not advantageous, and very unlikely to be chosen unless they're on a hilltop or such.

This may only apply in a declared war, but aren't there Geneva Convention rules about militarizing civilian buildings?
