Even if the method was improved to near-perfection, there'd still be the occasional false positive. An overturning of your conviction is a tad moot when you're dead.

A brief court process. A short time in prison. Then a bullet in the back of the head.
We will never know how many innocent people get executed that way.

I don't like killing for anything less than last-resort necessity. But I'm aware that a lot of people disagree with me. Some people seek the death penalty more readily. They don't want to pay taxes to support the life of a toxic citizen who is recalcitrant to remedy. I'm not willing to declare that my position is absolutely, eternally right, true and without exception. Kant wore out the idea of a categorical imperative for me. That's just pie in the sky and it's based on religious thinking. In real life, we have to compromise on uncertain issues like this one. I'm not one for tilting at windmills or going on crusades. Execute the fewest necessary, not the most possible. But when push comes to shove, in a democracy the majority vote carries the day. Usually, anyway.

Re: The Death Penalty is a Good Thing
"Innocent" people die all the time from accidents, disease, and crime. It's an unavoidable fact of life and that should be no reason to forgo the very beneficial death penalty.
What we really should do is lower the crime necessary for execution to say armed assault or robbery; that would save many truly innocent lives and untold billions $.
Most people in prison should probably be executed, but that isn't enough. Their minor offspring should all be sterilized as well as the other parent. Then we'd truly be applying genetics and eugenics to build a better world.

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Just wondering. Have you heard the news about Social Darwinism? Seems a lot of scholars have found fault with it, to say the least, you see...Tyrannical wrote:"Innocent" people die all the time from accidents, disease, and crime. I'm sure they find fault with social Darwinism because it interferes with either Christian egalitarianism or Socialist Lamarckism.

xtian egalitarianism and Socialist (or other flavors of) Lamarckism are dead meat because of the lack of supporting empirical evidence, just like....
...wait for it....
Whoa! Social Darwinism!! Who'd a-thunk it?

Not all killing is murder. Murder is an illegal killing which has been planned beforehand.

1) Find an old mine with only one entrance.
2) Put criminals in the mine.
3) Throw raw meat in every couple of days.
Problem solved.

I'm not sure exactly where you draw the line between social Darwinism and behavioral genetics, but BG attempts an empirical scientific answer. Casual examples of BG can be found in the well documented behavioral differences in dog breeds or in the former Soviet fox domestication studies.FBM wrote:Yes, I have!Tyrannical wrote:Have you heard of behavioral geneticsFBM wrote:Just wondering. Lamarckism was the official Soviet belief until the early sixties, so the "foxy" scientists had to hide some of their tenet theories.
Lamarckism isn't completely dead oddly enough through epigenetics, but that deserves a topic off it's self and I'm not totally up on that.

No, opposition to the death penalty is completely backwards and is grounded in pseudoscience or religious nonsense.Arse wrote:The death penalty is completely backward.

Re: The Death Penalty is a Good Thing
The death penalty is retarded. Its only used by societies that still have some growing up to do.
