Here is my theory.
One of them worked for the Russian atomic agency, and was having a mental breakdown.
He took a big lump of Uranium along with him, to commit suicide, and take some people with him when he went.
He gets his lump of Uranium out in the tent, and they all get the hell out of it, as fast as they can, cutting the tent with their knives to get away.
Even though it's freezing, they would rather freeze, than go back to the tent and face the loony with the lump of uranium.
Eventually, they all freeze to death.
A fox scavenges the tongue of one of them.
The authorities are embarrassed by what happened, and keep as much of it secret as they can.
