How common is irresponsibility of this magnitude? I think it is rare enough that a single case is newsworthy.

How much more common is it that people have kids before they're ready because they either don't have proper knowledge about birth control or have weird religious/cultural hangups about it than this case of apparent just-don't-give-a-fuck dereliction?

No, but I just wanted to make sure that people didn't think I was agreeing with Tyrannical regarding sterilization just because I was disagreeing with Gawdzilla.

I think education, equal opportunities, along with a culture of personal responsibility should do wonders for poverty among EDIT: certain sections of African Americans. But: There's the problem that the ethic of personal responsibility has been eroded because in that section of US society by severely unequal education and opportunities. In parts of the US, for a long time it was against the motherfucking law for black people to have equality.

For a long time after that, extralegal and informal factors still severely limited opportunities and return of effort. Just in the last couple decades have we gotten recognizably as close as where we are now in terms of equality in those areas and we're still not there really. So, it really comes across as goddamn hypocritical for a person on the beneficial end of these long standing biases to lecture those who've been on the shit end for so long.

Not to mention that among the predominantly white affluent sections of US society, the sense of personal responsibility has been eroding steadily as well. Shit! These kids in my town feel like the fascists are upon them when required to take a moment to watch for oncoming traffic before crossing the damn street, even when they're not texting.
