In my early childhood, we had no electricity nor indoor plumbing. We kept a garden, hunted and fished, not as hobbies, but for food that we couldn't have gotten otherwise. I worked 3 part-time jobs in university. At the same time, I mean. And made good grades while doing so. Now I'm comfortably in the middle class. I have no debts and, when I'm not fucking off, make a reasonably comfortable living. Am I special? Am I superior? Not in my opinion. In my opinion, the whole mentality of comparing oneself to others in terms of inferiority and superiority is a character flaw. A bad habit, at the very least. It's enthusiastically pumped into us by the media, advertising and corporate overlords...but why? So that some fat-ass big-wig can increase his market shares by 0.01% this quarter, that's why. Fuck them and that comparing mentality. It's childish and sophomoric. My dick is bigger than yours. I'm white and you're not. I'm American/British/Chinese/Bolivian/French and you're not. I have more toys/money/education/friends than you, so I'm better than you. Fuck off. Who gives a fuck? When I meet people like that IRL, I have only one thing to say to them: Nigga, please. Get over yourself.

Of course not. It would be unfair to infer from what you write whether you are horrible or not.

All that comes across is a someone a bit pathetic, insecure and desperate for attention.

Do a little Google research on him, he is often regarded as a fraud and a liar.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Believe it or not, I worked for 8 years at the same university where that guy is. Hell, I may have met and spoke to him, for all I know. :dunno: Sad that he's not white, eh? :sigh:

An interesting thing about intelligence is that brain size doesn't have much to do with it.
It's the internal setup of the brain that counts, and that is phenomenally complicated.

The brain of Ivan Turgenev, the Russian novelist, was weighed at 2021 gm.
The brain of Anatole France was weighed at only 1017 gm after his death.
Turgenev was a noted novelist, France was a Nobel Prize winning writer, one of the most important in French literature.

Whether they had similar IQs is irrelevant.

Seems to me it's just as childish and sophomoric to denigrate someone for being a "fat-add big-wig" as to denigrate someone for being poor.

He's not denigrating over economic status, but over values. :fp:
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

This is true. I have a very rich friend, and I respect him because he didn't make his money by fucking people over.

Mistermack, I don't often see things your way, but your contributions to this thread have been a hoot.

Sorry to derail. Back to the regularly scheduled program of bell curves and poor childhoods.

Same with Drewish, if you actually read what he's saying.

FBM doesn't like the values he perceives as characterizing some of the rich, such as caring about $10M in revenues if you work at a $100B company (his 0.01% comment), and Drewish doesn't like the values he perceives as characterizing some of the poor, like being lazy and willing to live off the efforts of others.

Oh no. I'm drunk. And sometimes when I get drunk I turn into a progressive. It's one of those times. I can't tell, the alcohol is either turning off the logic part of my brain or the asshole part.

I'm sure that's because you're female, Mai, but don't worry your pretty little head about it.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Actually, that is partly it. I might have been much better at math if my father had tutored me the way he tutored my brother, who, being a son, was always favored over my sister and I. My father had a PHD in mathematics.

When I was a child and adolescent, I was an A student, but not in math - I failed miserably. I feel certain it's because I developed a hatred for math as my unconscious rebellion towards my father. Later on, when I left home and went to college I started at the beginning (kind of) with algebra and got as far as Calculus with decent grades to prove to myself I wasn't that bad at math.

A short story, long perhaps, but also a good sidenote to the discussion at hand, since it's an example of just another factor that can affect learning and the development of it.
