One man is dead and another hospitalized after a bizarre incident off the MacArthur Causeway reportedly forced a police officer to open fire.

City of Miami police say the incident began Saturday afternoon about 2 p.m. when officers responded to reports of 2 men fighting in the bike path of the Biscayne Boulevard exit ramp, alongside the Miami Herald's parking garage -- where, according to the Herald, an officer observed a naked man eating another man's face:

The officer, who has not been identified, approached and saw that the naked man was actually chewing the other man's head, according to witnesses. The officer ordered the naked man to back away, and when he continued the assault, the officer shot him. The attacker continued to eat the man, despite being shot, forcing the officer to continue firing. Witnesses said they heard at least a half dozen shots.

"[Officers] attempted to separate them, there was some sort of confrontation," Miami Police spokesman Willie Moreno told Local10.

Photographs taken from the Herald's garage show the naked man lying dead at the scene. Police said the second male was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Officials have yet to identify the officer involved, the deceased, or the victim.

Wow, that is some sick and freaky fetish that guy had going on. What was the guy being attacked doing? Was he being held at gunpoint, or was he restrained at all? How intense and scary it must have been to have that guy latch on to him like that where he could actually get a bite out of the guy.

It's grotesque, but I don't see why the officer shot him. He was naked and unarmed, although obviously out of his mind.
You would think the cop could have used mace and his baton first, or a tazer if he had one.

He obviously didn't want to lose face.

He was in the process of killing somebody and did not respond when ordered off... the fact that he was busy chewing the other guy's face off proved he was strong and dangerous, ergo, in the face of non compliance, lethal force became a better option than trying to wrestle him down.
Mace or baton were too close range for such a case, and I suspect he would have used a taser had he had one.

No shit. Fastest way to end the situation is to end the perp. Less damage to the victim that way.

Oh, and many jurisdictions have a rule about releasing the name of the shooter in these cases. Retaliation by friends and family members is not uncommon. There will be a police board to determine if the shoot was righteous or if further investigation is need, possibly leading to charges being filed.

I'm perfectly sure neither would have been helpless without a gun. They would have stopped the guy pretty quick, they do that stuff every day.

Not that I'm blaming the cop in this instance. He followed his training I expect.
Its a bit ironic that there appears to have been no tazer available, in a situation that cries out for it.
I thought that patrol officers had them. A tazer would certainly stop a naked man.

If the guy was paranoid schizophrenic, it's a tragedy for everybody, and mental illness shouldn't be a death sentence for anybody.

Anyway, I'm sulking now, because nobody got my "lose face" joke.

As for the tazer, a lot of dusters think they make the most interesting tingling sensation, but once that goes away they're right back at what they were doing. The tazer is intended to incapacitate for a time after the charge to allow the officers to restrain the ALLEGED perp. Dusters don't do that.
