China fake parts 'used in US military equipment'

Vast numbers of counterfeit Chinese electronic parts are being used in US military equipment, a key Senate committee has reported.

A year-long probe found 1,800 cases of fake parts in US military aircraft, the Senate Armed Services Committee found.

More than 70% of an estimated one million suspect parts were traced back to China, the report said.

It blamed weaknesses in the US supply chain, and China's failure to curb the counterfeit market.

The failure of a key part could pose safety and national security risks and lead to higher costs for the Pentagon, the committee said.

(continued, that committee is clued up or what?) :smoke:

Someone want to say again how the US doesn't need a manufacturing sector?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Somebody wants to remind the people in procurement that they could get hanged in public places at Hallowe'en to provide decoration?

Well, now, no need for all the gloom and doom. I hear the North Koreans will be ready to market their nuclear wares globally soon. :coffee:

They don't offer much of a warranty, but they do give great discounts for repeat business.

Well, there is that, too... Seems that they're doing market research as we speak... :?

Hey, those components are not so much counterfeit or faked as they are copied. There is no reason to presume that they are of inferior quality. They'd definitely be cheaper than the originals, though. Ah, the virtues of private enterprise at work. Saving money.

As for the US military exposing itself to a weakness by relying on foreign products for its tools of destruction, I don't think so. Nothing stops them from buying the original components, should the need arise. Of course I'm assuming here that they are made in the USA, or at least in a country that is one of its reliable vassals.

I'm sure there are plenty of electronic components that are only available from foreign companies.

It's not so much that they are copied, it's that they are copied on the cheap using substandard materials, processes and facilities, resulting in an ungodly amount of faulty pieces that are not quality tested before being sold...

It's like 'fake' brand clothes and accessories... you have to know where you can find stuff that is the same as the original, except the brand owner did not get his cut, and where what you get is crap that won't last a day.
