Hey! It's all about "context" - or something.

Art is as much about intent as it is about execution. Indeed, the latter cannot be measured accurately without understanding the former.

Maybe I should sign male taurine excrement patties and sell them at inflated prices?

First you have to be "discovered". A parasite art critic must decide you are his next big thing. If he succeeds is fooling the people into believing you're 'great', the money will start rolling in.Svartalf wrote:Maybe I should sign male taurine excrement patties and sell them at inflated prices?

Provided you are a dab hand at self-promotion, you could open your own art factory and basically print money. The prints might look like pictures of Campbell's soup cans, but they'll work like real bank notes. Duchamp pioneered that sort of thing long before Warhol amped the process up.Gawdzilla wrote:First you have to be "discovered". A parasite art critic must decide you are his next big thing. Mind you, while the pyramid selling scheme keeps going, the artists' agents and the subsequent owners get the lion's share. I wonder how much Rothko sold the canvas for that just fetched 86.9 million dollars. He was pretty much struggling to keep his bread buttered until a few years before his death.Gawdzilla wrote:And laughed all the way to the bank.
A few years ago an auctioneer was heard to say this in order to encourage higher bids for a work: "X is in very poor health now." The price for an artist's output usually skyrockets after his or her death. So much for the 'intrinsic value' of art. Bullshit from go to wo.

The Chrome "attack site" warning should be gone now... it was the site the Rothko pic was hosted on, so I replaced all the links to a different file elsewhere.
