Post by Warren Dew » Tue May 08, 2012 1:22 am

So will there be a second round of voting? Who will lose and who will gain?

If I thought you were serious, I'd offer a bet.

It probably would be a good opportunity, though, if Turkey weren't trying to join the European Community themselves.

My own thought: New Democracy didn't try very hard to form a government because they think that new elections will blunt the "protest vote" factor - especially with Golden Dawn getting so many votes this time around - so they'd rather have another round.

If Syriza has the same theory, they will now try very hard to form a coalition of the left to cement their second place finish. This will be very difficult to do, especially if PASOK - the other traditional party besides New Democracy - wants another round of elections as well, to recover from their third place finish.

However, it's possible that Syriza will bank on making further protest gains in a second round, in which case they won't try too hard either.

Meanwhile, Tyrannical can enjoy the Golden Dawn result while it lasts.

They will leave the Euro, the economy will be competitive again and after five years or so after further meltdown they will start to get some sort of normality going again.

Always a possibility, though remote at the moment, that the military might step in again if the country becomes ungovernable in those five years.

Looks like Tyrannical was right, though I can't find his post right now - Golden Dawn held on to most of its votes.

The KKR lost half their votes in the revote, though, and are now the smallest party in parliament.

In other news, New Democracy plus PASOK have enough votes to form a proeuro government now if they still want to.

A cynic might say that a vote narrowly in favour of austerity is the result that was going to occur, regardless of the actual votes. Eurogeddon averted for a few weeks.
