The majority of immigrants of the first and second 'wave' after WW2 were invited, mostly to work at jobs which the native population considered too low paid. There were actually recruiting centres in the West Indies and a couple of other Commonwealth counties. Bradford and Handsworth are as much part of the UK as curry is part of our cuisine now.

The concept of war is extremely complicated, It is always easy to be against it and for peace, and most wars are fought unjustly, at least by the aggressors, but what will you do when attacked?

My father fought in WWII, you might say on the wrong side but for the right reasons. Finland got attacked by the mighty Soviet Union, and had no choice but to surrender completely or join forces with Germany. All too many of my parents generation died in that war, but as an outcome, my generation was born into a prospering western civilization instead of to post-Stalin Soviet Union. The common view here is that the war was justly fought, and that the later benefits overweight the hardships and atrocities of the war itself. Asfaik no historian has ever suggested a path for Finland, that would not have ended in either war or being re-assimilated by the Soviet.

So, no. I cannot claim that I would be against going to war in every circumstance, even though it naturally should be avoided as far as possible.

War is what happens when societies have too many young men and too few young women for them to screw and society needs to a) obtain more women; and b) cull the herd of young bucks of the more aggressive members who are causing social unrest because they can't get laid. It's a biological urge from way back when.

Every motive for war can be traced back to this fundamental societal balancing equation to one extent or another.

Which is why China and North Korea are so very damned dangerous to world peace, and Russia is a pretty toothless bear right now. Too many men in China and NK, too many women in Russia.

And this explains why today we have fewer wars, and less destructive wars than any time in history, how?
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

As a historian I have to take each war individually, and the motivations of each participating country separately. I cannot say "all war is bad", because there are times when it is the only way to solve a problem for a country. "Violence is the last resort of the fool, but sometimes it's the first resort of the wise man."

Sorry, but the facts do not support this contention:
Of the 52 German cities of 100,000 population and over in 1933 only two had more males than females.... (Gelsenkirchen and Oberhausen)
http://books.google.com/books?id=hlIkoH ... io&f=false

War is associated with population pressure, but not with high male to female sex ratio. That's why China is not dangerous to world peace, nor is Russia at present. It's also why the U.S. gets involved in more and bigger wars than other developed nations, because the other developed nations have recent fertility rates below replacement.

For now I'll just say that I'm glad I served under a Commander in Chief who knew the meaning of "peace through strength", and brought the Cold War to an end with a minimum of bloodshed.

Yup, certainly in the UK's best interest to trick the US into war.

Good thing they were willing to sink one of their largest liners and kill a bunch of people then, weren't it. :fp:

Makes me wonder how the Germans knew about it :thinks:

I'm sure the British would never have leaked that information to the Germans in hopes of drawing the US into war :eddy:

I thought the Illuminati and the Jews sank that one. :dunno:
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

No, they filled it with hydrogen and painted a swastika on it, then tried to burn down New Jersey. In retaliation, the US promptly bombed Pittsburgh.
