I just waded through a load of tweets under the #justiceforched hash tag.

(US people - Ched Evans is a pro football player (soccer) who has just been found guilty of rape)

Holy FSM there are some arseholes on there - some threatening to name the victim, some wanting a "go" on her as well. Even worse - some of the tweeters are women!

I have no words.

I've tried to reply to some of them but the sheer amount of stupid is too big to deal with.

There's certainly a lot of stupid around. I tried twitter for a bit, but lost interest pretty quickly because of this sort of nonsense.

Also I wasn't as interested as I thought I might be by Stephen Fry telling the world how nice a breakfast he had..

I think that's why that whole venue never appealed to me, in a nutshell.

IIRC the max punishment for simply naming a sexual assault / rape victim is a fine of £5000

If the person naming the victim also threatens or tries to incite violence then prison is an option.

As you can see, It's a sad day when an average footballer cannot rape who he likes, being that they are akin to immortal pan-sexual walking gods. As you can also see the ramification for jailing footballing rapists is that their fanbase become confused because they are without their specific sexual totem to channel their mostly homoerotic desires properly.

The reaction of Twitter shows they are needed.

Until society reaches the point where victims no longer feel shame about being raped the ID shield continues to be necessary otherwise the prosecution process becomes more of an ordeal than it already is. A huge amount of rapes go unreported. The reports would reduce further if the victim was named.

Rape is the only offence where surveys continue to show jurors might blame the victim.

Actually Red not really a good idea to complain about generalisations when one makes equally ill informed assumptions. I used to go to football all the time as a kid AND I used to work for a Football Club until 2006. Where I live football IS indivisible to religion for a lot of arseholes. When Rangers and Celtic play you better hope you don't have an accident because the casualty departments are full of people assaulted by fans. The domestic violence rate goes through the roof and that's not including the sectarian occassional sectarian fuelled pitched battles that flare up here or are occassionally exported to Belfast. That's just the fans. I don't know how many times I've seen in footballers charged with assault, sexual assualt, rape and gang rape. I don't know how many managers and staff have been up on charges for corruption and match fixing.

I sneer at football because here it is a holdout for misogynists, racists homophobes and bigots and we tend to turn a blind eye to it because somehow we as a society think that like religion it should be immune to any social accountability in and of itself. Almost exactly like a religion.
