These LED builbs are being built by Philips who make things robustly for early adopters. What happens when they are made by the dodgy lot who are making all the other cheaper bulbs? Reliability depends on simple design and production. Philips might pull of the twenty year stunt but it doesn't mean they'll be reliable in mass productions for the masses. Anyone got a cicuit diagram for one of these and looked at how many parts there are to make it work? :smoke:

Philips stuff is NOT robust... I want money to get myself a new stereo, because my philips one had the facking cd unit give out after less than 5 years of service... now, all I'm left with is a radio tuner with big speakers.

Nobody makes good cd players. The best you can hope for is that it's easy and cheap to replace the module.
If you get one that lasts, you're just lucky.
I would never buy a cd based hifi. Hard disk is the way to go. ( but always with back-up ).

Ans why is it so difficult to get an energy-saving bulb with the same brightness as a 200 watt incandescent bulb? :gaah:
....err...because generally you need more energy to make something brighter because of the higher photon emission rate? :ask:

These bulbs are supposed to be about saving energy by delivering several times more light using less power, not trying to make me blind by also putting an upper limit on lighting levels. :what:

A CFL bulb producing 2,000+ lumen should require about 35 watts of power. Where are they hiding these bulbs? :mob:

What disturbs me most with this outfacing of the incandescents, is that the quality of the light from most of the replacements is so shitty. Not only are their Colour rendering indexes (CRI) far from what you get with the smooth blackbody radiation from an incandescent, but many of the cheaper brands even give visibly tinted (green or pink) light. :|~

I don't know, but it sounds like you've got a lottery ticket in your pocket with that idea. Get working on the business plan, and file the patent application. You'll make it rich.

Would suck to pay $60 for a bulb and then have it accidentally broken. The great thing about cheap bulbs is that they're cheap.

But, if these things are sturdy and significantly cut down on power usage, and still put out sufficient light, then they may be worth it.

The government mandates, though, are unnecessary, and probably orchestrated by the large manufacturers' lobbyists anyway. Oh, look! The government is mandating that people buy our more expensive products!

LED bulbs have been around for a while now. They're pricey, but a lot cheaper than $60 for the most part...

The Sun is actually almost white, but looks yellow. This is because the blue part of sunlight get's scattered by the atmosphere more. That's why the black sky looks blue, and the white Sun looks yellow.

Remove the blue component from the white Sunlight, and it looks yellow.

But on a cloudy day, the clouds remix the yellow and the blue, and so the daylight is the original white again.

So you could turn yellowish light white, with a blue filter. But you would lose brightness.
You could just paint all the walls in your house blue. :teef:
Actually, if you put one drop of blue paint in a quart of white paint you'll get the same effect.

Why would anyone want bright lights in the house. It just allows you and your spouse to see how each of you deteriorates with age. You need good light for reading, but you should drop the lumen count in common areas by about 10% per five years of marriage....
