Good Comedy

Post by maiforpeace » Wed Apr 18, 2012 8:53 am

I love watching comedy...do you have any favorites? I have a lot...I love to laugh.
"Bryan Callen: Man Class" - a Showtime special. Hilarious. He's a fabulous physical comedian.

I've been a stand up comedy fan since I was 8, and I'm not entirely sure why as most of it went over my head at that age. But yeah, I posted a few of my favs in this thread: http://www.rationalia.com/forum/viewtop ... 32&t=35386

So besides those (David Cross, Patton Oswalt, Eddie Izzard) I also love the obvious ones like George Carlin and Bill Hicks, and lots of others like Louis C.K., Mitch Hedberg, John Oliver, Doug Stanhope, Dylan Moran, Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock, Lewis Black, Jimmy Carr, Paul F. Tompkins, Dave Attell, and a great one very few people know of named Mike Birbiglia. I'm forgetting a lot, but those are off the top of my head

I tend to prefer comedy panel shows. Mock the Week, Would I Lie To You, Whose Line is it Anyway, etc. They're not always good, but when the are, they can be brilliant. There's something about having four or five comedians bouncing ideas on random subjects off each other that can lead to unique and unpredictable moments that the comedians alone would never reach.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Maria Bamford!

Maria Bamford is the bomb. Or whatever the kids are saying these days.

More people should watch her, because she is very funny, and also smart.

This is just a random clip on Youtube-- just the first thing I grabbed. But there's a lot more out there.

The green careening planet
spins blindly in the dark
so close to annihilation.

Listen. No one listens. Meow.

He grew up in the next town over from mine. Which makes me wonder which Mill Pond he was talking about!

You know who I've been enjoying? Katy Brand's Big Ass Show.

It's really weird sometimes. Like, bizarrely weird. But I like that.

I particularly enjoy her Kate Winslet impersonation.

And Mai, if you're not watching Wanda Sykes, you really should.

She's everywhere, but here's a clip:

Bookmarking for End of August.

I'm spending some serious time and money at the Comedy Festival in Edinburgh, I'll let you know who I thought was good then.

Rachel's list is tremendous, though personally I think Gervais has lost it currently. I'd add Dave Gorman, Stewart Lee, surprisingly Stephen Merchant's show was brilliant, Greg Davies and I'll repeat that Louis C.K. is on fire at the moment.

I LOVE MARIA BAMFORD!!!

Did the whole breakdown thing really happen, or was that just part of her act?
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.
